It wasn’t easy to find a free spot. You can walk down Via Vittorio Emmanuele or Via Maqueda, but you find hidden gems in the narrow streets.

Walk down Palermo walking streets

It’s time to get up and explore Palermo. The connection is fast and will take you to Palermo Centrale (The central train station of Palermo) in about 30 minutes. Book the train tickets in advance here.

BUS | The bus from Palermo airport was our way to reach the centre. The bus stop is located about 5 minutes away from the arrival terminal. The bus departs every 30 minutes, run by the company Presta and Comande. Note that the bus is often fully booked, and we suggest getting your ticket before landing in Palermo. CHECK THE AVAILABILITY HERE. Compared to the Train it will take you to several stops along the city centre and neighbouring areas. The ticket costs only €6,5.

SHARED SHUTTLE | When we landed in Palermo, we noticed there was another way to get to the city centre. You can hop on a shared shuttle that works like a taxi but is shared with other travellers. You can show up and pay €8 for the ride and might make some friends to share your trip.

PRIVATE TRANSFER | You can always book a private transfer if you are unwilling to share a shuttle. The driver will wait for you at the arrival hall, and it’s the coolest way to start your Sicilian adventure. The best transfer we suggest checking out is this.

TAXI | Taxi is the quickest, easiest but costly way to get from Palermo airport to the city centre. This might be the better option if you are exploring Palermo in one day. Outside the arrival area is the taxi depot, hail one, and it will get everywhere in the city. Fees are high, with about €60 to €80 to get to the centre.

Palermo has just one airport

Often, travellers mistake Palermo as having more than one airport. In fact, usually, you will see that Palermo Airport is named Punta Raisi, but also Falcone-Borsellino. Technically, it’s the same airport, and Punta Raisi is the older name of the airport located in the homonymous area on the east side of Palermo. The airport was then named after the two judges, iconic figures in the fight against the mafia. So, you will now know that it is the International Airport Falcone and Borsellino of Palermo – Punta Raisi (PMO).

How to get around Palermo in 24 hours

Palermo has no metro, and the bus passes outside the centre. However, it’s good to know that from the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi all down to Via Ruggiero Settimo and Via Maqueda, the most popular streets of Palermo are pedestrian areas only.

You walk around for 1,3 Kilometres and about 20 minutes walking without a car around you. On the way to Marsala, stop at the Saline dello Stagnone. Customize your Palermo day trip plan as you please.

Archaeological Museum: Palermo’s Archaeological Museum boasts a vast collection of artefacts, providing a comprehensive look into Sicily’s rich ancient history, including ancient Greek statues and intricate Roman mosaics. As a history buff, I was fascinated.

Palazzo Butera: Palazzo Butera, recently restored, is now home to a modern art museum. Its vast areas display rotating exhibits that highlight contemporary artists from Sicily and around the world. The rooftop of this space is impressive, offering a great landscape view of Palermo for a quick visit.

Modern Art: The Gallery of Modern Art is located in the stunning 15th-century Palazzo Belmonte Riso and showcases a collection of modern and contemporary Sicilian art. It is a must-see destination for art enthusiasts.

Capuchin Catacombs: These catacombs offer a unique glimpse into Palermo’s past, housing thousands of mummified bodies in various states of preservation – a fascinating if somewhat macabre sight.

Botanical Gardens: The Botanical Gardens, dating back to 1789, offer a serene escape and a wide variety of plant species in the city’s heart. Here we found the oldest tree in Palermo.

The Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum: Little unknown, this museum is a tribute to one of the most traditional arts of Sicily, the puppets show. It’s right in the centre, and a quick visit can highlight the local customs and way of life.

Villino Florio: Hidden through the concrete residential area of Palermo, not so far from Capo Market, Villino Florio is one of the best things we have seen while in Palermo. It’s free to visit and it’s part of Palermo council assets. The villa in a complex art Nouveau Style has been recently restored after a wild fire. It reminded us of Casa Vicente in Barcelona, check if it gets to your mind too.

Parco d’Orleans | One of the most fascinating parks in Palermo. If you want to see peakocks, parrots, flamingos this is the right place. We suggest visiting D’Orleans Park if visiting Palermo with kids.

Is Palermo worth visiting

Yes, Palermo is definitely worth a visit, as it is the capital of Sicily and offers a beautiful blend of history and culture. The city showcases a mix of architectural styles, vibrant markets, and exceptional culinary delights.

You can explore the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Arab-Norman Palermo, and enjoy the bustling streets, stunning churches, and palaces that showcase the perfect blend of old and new.
