What drew us to Ravenna is its collection of <strong>early Christian mosaics found in several 5th and 6th-century churches and monuments<\/strong>, now protected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/visit-ravenna-2\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/visit-ravenna-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: var(--stk-global-color-27229, #003f48);background: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 50%, var(--stk-global-color-51053, #ffe1d6) 50%)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were stunned by the incredibly detailed mosaics depicting Christian imagery and stories, with shimmering gold, blue, and green glass tiles. The mosaics at the <strong>Basilica of San Vitale<\/strong> and the <strong>Mausoleum of Galla Placidia<\/strong> alone make <strong>Ravenna worth seeing!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"compact-size-makes-it-perfect-for-walking\" data-block-type=\"core\"><strong>Ravenna is easy to walk through<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reason Ravenna delighted us is its small, walkable size. The major sights like the <strong>Basilica of San Vitale and Dante&#8217;s Tomb<\/strong> are all located within the historic city centre, surrounded by pedestrian streets lined with restaurants and shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were able to visit all the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: var(--stk-global-color-27229, #003f48);background: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 50%, var(--stk-global-color-51053, #ffe1d6) 50%)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">UNESCO monuments<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and main piazzas easily in two days without feeling rushed. The city is located in a part of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/italiantripabroad.it\/Blog\/tag\/emilia-romagna-travel-guides\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"9342\">Emilia-Romagna region<\/a><\/strong>, which is known as the &#8220;<strong>Food Valley of Italy<\/strong>&#8220;. So, yes food makes Ravenna appealing too. While here you must sample dishes like cappelletti (pasta), piadina (filled flatbread), and squacquerone (soft cheese).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had amazing meals at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osteriapassatelli.it\/en\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.osteriapassatelli.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--stk-global-color-27229, #003f48);background: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 50%, var(--stk-global-color-51053, #ffe1d6) 50%)\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Osteria Passatelli<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, a cosy spot by the main square, serving homemade pasta and seafood. Then you must also pay a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/JZt9G1A\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/JZt9G1A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ca&#8217; de Ven<\/a>, a wine bar with an extensive regional wine list and cheese boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fascinating-off-the-beaten-path-day-trips\" data-block-type=\"core\"><strong>Plan off path day trips<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Ravenna itself deserves at least 2 days, we used it as a base to take some rewarding day trips in the area. We were on a 12 days itinerary, through some of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/italiantripabroad.it\/Blog\/most-beautiful-cities-italy\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14661\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best cute villages in Emilia Romagna<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So drove another 30 minutes south of Ravenna to explore mosaic-filled Sant&#8217;Apollinare in Classe Basilica. Afterwards in the afternoon, we also drove an hour east to Urbino &#8211; a Renaissance gem and the birthplace of Raphael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bit uphill, but gorgeous village. Don&#8217;t be discouraged by distances, afterall it is small, and everything is walkable.
