Things to know before visiting Dubai

Which currency is in Dubai

The currency used in Dubai is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED). The approximate exchange rates are 1 USD = 3.67 AED, 1 GBP = 4.88 AED, and 1 EUR = 4.36 AED. The best way to make payments in Dubai is using a credit/debit card, which is also perfect for tracking your expenses while on the go. We always suggest carrying a minimal amount of cash to minimise losses.

In fact, we withdrew cash just to pay for a bus ticket to Abu Dhabi, but mostly you can pay by card. ATMs are widely available in Dubai, and using local ATMs with your card is a convenient way to retrieve cash at competitive rates. Our experience is that Mastercard offers the best rates for currency conversion.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is during the cooler months, from November to March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for desert excursions, water sports and many other outdoor activities. April is also a good month, but temperatures increase within the day. Of course, the high season is also when most tourists come to explore the city, so prices are higher compared to the hotter months.

However, exploring Dubai in June, July, and August might help you to budget better and find deals on accommodations and experiences. However, exploring Dubai in the hotter season means dealing with temperatures over 40 °C, which makes it impossible to get out during the day.

How to get from Dubai airport to the city centre

The best way to get from Dubai Airport to the city centre is by metro. However, public transport is one of many ways to reach the city centre of Dubai from the airport. In fact, the Dubai Metro is a fast and affordable choice, connecting Terminals 1 and 3 to various key destinations.

Taxis, instead, are the best choice for travellers who want to reach their hotel or final destination directly and easily. Alternatively, rideshare services and airport buses are also accessible. You can book your own transport before travelling to Dubai and get your driver waiting at the arrival hall. Check the offers starting from $20.

How long should you spend in Dubai?

We are great fans of stopovers in Dubai, and this is mainly because the city is made for travellers. With its fast and reliable public transport network, you can easily reach destinations, activities and landmarks. Let’s say that everything above 3 days in Dubai is perfect. However, the ideal duration for a visit to Dubai depends on your interests and the experiences you wish to embrace.

A 5 to 7-day stay allows you to explore the city’s iconic attractions, indulge in shopping, and enjoy various activities. If you have enough funds, think about a 10-day stay in Dubai, which will give you a more in-depth exploration. However, we spent 3 full days in Dubai, let’s say just a short trip that gave us a glimpse of the city highlights. Well, we are now craving to come back at any time; it is a fun city and definitely built on leisure and pleasant things to do.

How to get around Dubai

Getting around Dubai is cheap; yes, you read right! We were shocked too. A simple ride from our hotel (The 25hours hotel next to the Museum of the Future) to Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa cost us just 3 Dirhams, less than a dollar. Getting around Dubai is a breeze with its well-connected transportation network.

METRO | The Dubai Metro is efficient and covers key areas, including the airport and popular attractions. Taking public transport, consider getting the Nol Card; this will allow you seamless and cheap access to public transport.

TRAM | The tram offers scenic rides in the Marina and JBR areas. Buses are extensive and affordable, serving various routes across the city. For an iconic experience, the Palm Monorail offers a stunning view of the Palm Jumeirah.

TAXI | Taxis are always available, and even if expensive, you can get one booking through Careem , the local private transportation app. Water taxis (Abra) offer a traditional way to cross Dubai Creek.

CAR RENTAL | We have also rented a car in Dubai. We had a Mini Cooper to get around the streets and also visited the Dubai Frame, which divides the old Dubai from the new Dubai. Renting a car is another option for flexibility; although navigating traffic might be daunting, ensure you have the GPS ready. CHECK PRICES TO RENT A CAR IN DUBAI.

Save on attractions admission

We know that three days in Dubai might be very expensive, and that’s why it is, for many people a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, we must say that even though some attractions are very expensive, there is always a way to save some bucks, and why not spend it on some other activities?

The first option that allows you to save some money while in Dubai is to get a Dubai Pass with Go City.

The card gives you access to over 60 Dubai attractions, including a 1-day ticket for the hop-on and hop-off Dubai Big Bus tour. Choose a day of fun at the Aquaventure waterpark at Atlantis the Palm, or cruise the Dubai Creek on a dhow boat while feasting on a delicious dinner, and much more.

  • Lunch at Armani: Delight in a sophisticated lunch at Armani Hotel, an elegant establishment within Burj Khalifa.

Embracing the iconic Dubai Skyline

Burj Khalifa: Touching the Sky

Your journey begins with a visit to the iconic Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Ascend to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the city’s skyline that will amaze you. This iconic landmark will likely be sold out if you wish to purchase the tickets within the day. We suggest booking in advance here to not miss the opportunity; the view from above is incredible.

Stopover in Dubai on top of the Burj Khalifa the highest buildings in the world - How to spend 3 days in Dubai itinerary

The Dubai Mall: Shopping and Beyond

As we stepped into the Dubai Mall, we were already spending money. It is the Dubai effect, and Dubai’s Shopping Mall has everything you wish. Adjacent to Burj Khalifa is The Dubai Mall, a shopper’s paradise. Explore its extensive range of shops, from haute couture to quirky boutiques. Don’t miss the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, an aquatic wonderland within the Mall.

Dubai Fountain Show: A Spectacle of Lights

Let us state that this was the best-ever fountain show. We witness the one at the Petronas Towers, which is impressive, but the Burj Khalifa in the background and the powerful splashes are insane in Dubai. As evening sets in, witness the captivating Dubai Fountain Show, a symphony of water and lights choreographed to music. It’s a mesmerising experience that perfectly encapsulates the city’s grandeur.

Dubai Sky View

Another way to enjoy the Dubai Skyline is the view from the sky deck. Even though this first day in Dubai seems very condensed, believe us, it is possible. In fact, most of the attractions on the first day of your Dubai itinerary are located at a short distance within the same district. Also, think that by taking the metro, you can get directly inside the Dubai Shopping Mall, the biggest in the world, and don’t get out until dark after completing all your activities.

One of them is definitely Dubai Sky View, a deck with privileged landscape views over the Burj Khalifa, old and New Dubai. If you are lucky, it’s possible to spot Dubai Frame and the Museum of the Future on a clear day in the distance. Also, consider that the Dubai Sky view is one of the cheapest activities on our Dubai itinerary for 3 days. The entry costs only 80 AED ($20 | €19 | £17).

Dubai Snow Park

Within the Dubai Mall complex, there is a huge snow park to fulfil your winter dreams. Yes, in the capital of 40°C all year round, there is the perfect Saint Claus hotspot to enjoy through slopes, bobs and skiing. We have included it in our guide to three days in Dubai, but you might have to choose between some of the best activities.

Getting inside the Dubai Snow Park is easy and actually not much expensive compared to other activities. Also, consider that the snow park might give you a full fun day in Dubai for just 240 AED ($65 | €60 | £50). We suggest booking in advance as there are just limited entries per day.

Dubai aquarium is one of the best experiences in Dubai for a stopover

Dubai Mall Aquarium

It was one of Toti’s dreams, and we squeezed in the Dubai Mall Aquarium in our condensed 3 days itinerary in Dubai. It was fantastic, and you must visit it. Even though we have been on many snorkelling trips, especially while on the extensive journey in 9 months through Asia, it was fantastic. We missed seeing razors on our snorkelling day in Nusa Penida, but we did in Dubai. The Mall has a fantastic Aquarium, built upon three huge levels, hosting the biggest water tank in the world with species that I don’t believe existed.

You will pass through the underwater tunnel, which is fantastic for spotting marine species, following the sharks while swimming peacefully, and taking some unique photos in Dubai. The ticket to the Dubai Aquarium includes a visit to the Marine Zoo, which we appreciate at most.

We learned about sustainability and ways to improve our way to preserve the planet. Along with that, there were plenty of guides about marine species and other mammals. We suggest checking the availability for tickets as it was pretty packed even though it was low season. Remember that there are limited entries per day, with different time slots. Check online tickets here.

Day 2 in Dubai: Embracing the Culture

The second day in Dubai will see you get through some of the most intense cultural experiences. After all, you might be attracted to Dubai for the impressive skyline, unique restaurants or shopping facilities. Well, Dubai is built on a sense of respect that comes from the local culture. On day two, we suggest you immerse yourself in Dubai’s rich culture and experience the desert’s allure.

MORNING

  • Heritage Village: Explore the Heritage Village to discover Dubai’s traditional past, including reconstructed homes, craft demonstrations, and local artefacts.
  • Al Fahidi Historic District: Wander through the charming alleys of Al Fahidi, where art galleries, museums, and historical buildings await.

AFTERNOON

  • Lunch at Arabian Tea House: Relish a traditional Emirati meal at Arabian Tea House, surrounded by lush gardens and a serene ambience.

EVENING

  • Desert Safari: Embark on an exhilarating desert safari adventure, including dune bashing, meeting the camels, and a bedouin show.

Desert Safari: Dune Bashing and Beyond

The most remarkable experience in Dubai is definitely the desert safari. Traverse the golden sand dunes, experience dune bashing, and immerse yourself in Emirati culture at a desert camp. We did this tour with Platinum Heritage on a 1950s Land Rover. They are a truly sustainable company that tries their best to keep alive the Bedouins’ culture. Stay overnight in their Bedouin Camp and participate in a delicious Emirati Dinner, with a show and stargazing night following. Check out this Desert Tour in Dubai.

Bastakiya Quarter: Old Dubai’s Charm

Stroll through the narrow lanes of Bastakiya Quarter, where wind-towered buildings harken back to Dubai’s past. The art galleries and cafés add a contemporary touch to the area’s old-world charm. BOOK YOUR TOUR.

Best hotel in Dubai - 25hours hotel Dubai city centre - View of the museum of the future from Dubai hotel - 3 Days in Dubai itinerary

25Hours Hotel Dubai is the best for a five-star experience at an affordable price

We stayed in the most amazing hotel in Dubai. Actually, we think this is the coolest place we have been so far. The 25hours hotel is located in the centre of downtown Dubai, at three metro stops from the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. What attracted us most, over the distance from the main attractions, was the affordability.

You might think that Dubai is very expensive, and the major voice on your bills is the accommodation. The 25hours hotel is a luxury hotel that offers incredible rates that make Dubai possible. The breakfast was outstanding, concentrating the best from around the world with a deep local tradition. The cherry on the cake is their fantastic pool overlooking the Museum of the Future and the skyscrapers in the backdrop.
