Stopover in Dubai: The ultimate guide to making the most of your layover in Dubai
Our fantastic stopover in Dubai just ended, and we are craving to return anytime soon. Before the trip, we couldn’t expect to love this city so much. Dubai is a captivating blend of modern marvels and rich cultural heritage. Today the UAE’s most popular city is a fabulous destination for travellers, and I have said many times it looks like a perfect theme park for adults. We decided to do a Dubai stopover because the destination is midway between Europe and Asia, and our route from Bangkok to Rome was perfect for relaxing and enjoying life for a few days.
Surprisingly Dubai can be affordable. Actually, our intercontinental flight with a long layover in Dubai costs us less than a long tiring direct flight. Also, consider that Emirates, the major airline company in the region, offers entire packages for a layover in Dubai, with free meals, transport and accommodations, which might be the ideal bargain you are looking for.
In this comprehensive guide to a stopover in Dubai, we will delve into the essence of this city, providing you with insider tips and a handpicked selection of must-see attractions and activities. Get ready to immerse yourself in Dubai’s glitz, glamour, and cultural wonders!

Is it worth a stopover in Dubai?
Yes, absolutely worth it. A stopover in Dubai is an adventure filled with endless possibilities. From exploring iconic landmarks and immersing yourself in the city’s rich cultural heritage to indulging in exquisite culinary experiences and thrilling adventures, Dubai has something to offer every traveller. However, plan your stopover wisely, embrace the local culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Visiting Dubai changed our mind about this place. What we have always seen as merely fake cities that attract only rich people is now, for us, a fantastic place to pass by every time we have to reach the other side of the globe. We are already planning our next stopover in Dubai, filled with many other activities, and maybe going over the boundaries.

Planning Your Dubai Stopover
Well, planning is the key to having the perfect stopover in Dubai. You should consider how much time you have available to visit the city, and consequently where to stay, if closer to the city centre and attractions, or if for a short stay nearby the airport. However, all of that needs to take into consideration the seasonality.
Even though Dubai experiences sunny days all year round, summer is extremely hot and might compromise your plans. When we visited Dubai in early July, the temperature exceeded 40 °C daily, with the humidity factor that leveraged it up to 47°C. This section about planning a stopover in Dubai also has a special subtopic about travel insurance and affordable hotels for a unique experience in the UAE.
Stopover Duration Considerations
When planning your stopover in Dubai, consider the duration of your layover. Basically, a stopover is a long-stay layover that might allow you to do more activities, sightseeing, relax or acclimatise with your new timezone.
We stayed in Dubai for a few days to get used to the London timezone, as it is just 3 hours ahead of the England capital. Ideally, you would want a layover in Dubai of at least 24 to 48 hours to fully experience the city’s highlights. However, even a shorter stopover can provide you with a taste of Dubai’s magic.
You can use your time to enjoy the fantastic shops in Dubai Mall, explore the cultural heritage of Old Dubai, or see the skyline from Dubai Marina. Spending a full 3 days stopover in Dubai can recharge your batteries and prepare you for another adventure.
Best Time to Visit Dubai for a Stopover
Dubai experiences a desert climate with scorching summers and pleasant winters. In fact, winter is the best time to visit Dubai, as the temperatures are perfect for outdoor experiences like desert safari, skydiving and even the beach to skip European winter. The best time for a stopover in Dubai is during winter, from November to March, when temperatures are milder.
Tips for finding affordable flights with layovers in Dubai
We always look for flights bargain and after a few years of travelling with the flow of the best budget-friendly connections from place to place. Finding affordable flights for your stopover in Dubai is essential. Consider booking flights with longer layovers, as they often come at a lower cost.
We know that you might think it is tiring to change planes and spend hours upon hours at check-ins, but long layovers allow you to experience places in their essence and fly out with pleasant memories.
Additionally, Emirates is now offering fantastic Dubai Connect Stopover Packages. This package provides complimentary accommodation, meals, and transportation for eligible passengers, making your stopover even more rewarding. Check your next flight to Dubai here.
Dubai Travel Insurance
We always get abroad purchasing a travel insurance beforehand, especially during layovers or stopovers. It was the same travelling to Dubai, connecting our route from Asia to Europe. You never know what can go wrong, with missed connection or general problems while travelling. We use Safety Wings for our long-haul flights and have general all-year insurance with HeyMondo (Read our review and grab a discount on us!).
Planning a stopover itinerary in Dubai, including activities like Desert Safari, Skydiving, Jet Skiing or similar experiences, it’s essential to have travel insurance. However, this is not just indicated because medical problems might occur, but also if your luggage gets lost, the connection between train and flight.
Also, if you want the comfort of renting your own car as we did, many rental car agencies will lower the cost of car insurance if you have your Travel insurance. Check a travel insurance coverage cost. For us, having Travel Insurance is the way to enjoy our vacation with peace of mind.
Don’t travel without travel insurance
We always recommend SafetyWing if you are embracing a long trip. We use them from 2018, and never get disappointed. Used to travel through South East Asia, Caribbean but also for short trips in Europe and around.
If you are a Digital Nomad looking to have pace of mind while staying abroad, go for SafetyWing like we do. They offers a fantastic plan, that you can renew monthly, without hidden fees and reliable assistance.

Arriving in Dubai
Your long layover in Dubai starts here, from information about the airport, to how to get around Dubai, transit options and visa. We have cleared all the basic steps you must follow to enjoy your long or short stopover in Dubai.
Information about Dubai International Airport (DXB)
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is one of the busiest airports in the world, offering state-of-the-art facilities and services. The fantastic hub is located just a short distance from the city centre; it serves as a convenient gateway for travellers on a stopover. You can reach the airport by private transport, arrange a taxi with your hotel, or hire a driver when you arrive at the airport using the Careem App.
If planning a stopover, you should optimise your time and resources, so you better look for transport beforehand. We suggest booking a private transfer which costs about £35 (€40 | $42 – One way).
There is also a budget option to navigate Dubai through its efficient metro station. You can book your NOL Card (perfect for metro, tram, monorail and bus transport within the city). If you book in advance your NOL Card, you will also receive a sim card package when you land in Dubai. Check this offer here.
Transit options and airport facilities
Dubai International Airport offers various transit options, including taxis, public buses, and metro connections, ensuring easy access to the city. The airport boasts an array of amenities, from duty-free shopping and dining options to luxurious lounges and relaxation areas. If you want the comfort of visiting Dubai at your own pace, we suggest requesting an NOL card upon arrival. Check this card with a sim card package for just £16 (€19 | $20).
If you are spending a long time in the airport, Dubai offers prime experiences in world-class lounges. If you are travelling a lot or getting a long-haul flight to Asia or Europe, you might want to eat something, stay relaxed in a calm place, enjoy a view over the runaway, or simply catch up with e-mails. Check if there is availability for a special lounge in Dubai Airport, which costs only £40 (€43 | $45) with full access to premium access, including food, drinks and wifi.
Immigration and Visa Requirements
Before starting your stopover in Dubai, familiarise yourself with the immigration and visa requirements. Many nationalities can enjoy a visa-free stay for up to 30 days, while others may require a visa-on-arrival or pre-approved visa. Check the official website of the Dubai Immigration Department for the latest information.
It was easy for us to get into the United Arab Emirates visa-free. The airport has electronic access, which gives you step-free entry to Dubai and a very easy procedure.
Accommodation Options for Your Stopover
With an incredible array of accommodation Dubai is able to accommodate every kind of traveller. From budget-friendly accommodations, with hostels and more, to super luxurious and of course expensive rooms and apartments.
Luxurious Hotels near the Airport
Depending on your budget and how long you spend in Dubai, you can have a unique experience in the UAE. If you are seeking convenience and luxury, several exceptional hotels are located near Dubai International Airport. Also, consider staying within the hub, taking advantage of the Dubai International Airport Hotels, which offers elegant rooms and suites, spa facilities, and easy access to the airport terminals.
Our suggested hotel for a fantastic stay in Dubai | 25hour Hotel Dubai
We suggest looking into the 25Hours hotel if you have two or more days in Dubai. This fantastic hotel is in the heart of the main sightseeing of the futuristic city, within 3 stops from Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Sky Deck and the fountains. From the rooftop, you have a fantastic view of the Museum of the Future and the idealised landscape of the Dubai skyscraper from the refreshing pool. We stayed at the 25-hours hotel in Dubai for a few days, and it was one of the best places we have been so far.
Apart from the unique style that will make you feel at home immediately, we found the 25-hour Hotel Dubai a place we enjoyed even just walking around. If you feel tired, there is a rooftop pool and a Spa, a barber shop, two restaurants, bars and a coffee place always open. It is perfect for relaxing after a full day of sightseeing or a long haul-flight recovery.

Exploring Dubai’s Iconic Landmarks
We recommend spending at least 5 days in Dubai to fully experience all that it has to offer. However, even a short layover can provide a great experience. From the iconic Burj Khalifa to the view from the Palm, Dubai knows how to impress you. It was love at first sight with Dubai.
Well, we have to be honest, I (Toti) was a bit sceptical and never wanted to visit Dubai, as from the outside you see just a man-made city, made for attracting mass. However, I have completely changed my mind and am constantly looking for another flight to Dubai.
The city is amazing and perfectly welcoming to everyone to experience what should look like a holiday time, a layover, a stopover, or even a workcation abroad. Yes, you can easily take your tasks on the go, and work from world-class facilities, making the best of your time exploring the best iconic landmarks in this world.

The Palm Jumeirah: A Man-Made Island Wonder
The view from the Palm was the first rooftop we visited in Dubai, and even though the weather wasn’t perfect due to the heat, it is still an activity we suggest to everyone. We spent a lot of time before getting to the top of the centre building on the man-made island just to learn about the project’s foundation, from the childhood idea to the completion of one of the most interesting engineering marvels in the world.
You might not know, but the original project was just circular, only later became the shape of a palm that is today a symbol of Dubai and UAE. The artificial palm-shaped island stretches into the Arabian Gulf and is perfectly visible even from space. On the island today live over 5,000 people, and there are some of the most luxurious resorts in Dubai, unique water sports activities, and pristine beaches.
We got to the top sky deck and had the perfect view of the shape. Our ticket included an exclusive entrance to the lounge, where we enjoyed a drink and some snacks with a view. Check the ticket and skip the line entrance.
Burj Khalifa: The Tallest Building in the World
Let me say that we touched the sky and it was fantastic. My ears are still popping from scaling the over 160 stories to the top in about one minute. The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, with 829.8 m (2,722 ft).
No visit to Dubai is complete without a visit to the awe-inspiring Burj Khalifa. Soaring at a staggering height, this architectural masterpiece offers breathtaking views of the city skyline. You can see the Desert, the Persian Gulf, oil refineries, old and new Dubai. We reached the top of the Burj Khalifa, which was like touching the sky.
You can stay within the deck and have a perfect 360 view over Dubai, learn the history of this building, and what inspired it to be the best in the world. Book your Burj Khalifa visit here to save money and skip the line.

Dubai Marina: A Vibrant Waterfront Community
It was the last day of our fantastic stopover in Dubai, and thanks to the 25-hour hotel, we enjoyed a drive through the city to reach the waterfront. On the side of the Creek, Dubai Marina is perfect to admire the skyline. Booking a room at the 25-hour Hotel Dubai gives you access to a complimentary 4-hour car rental through Mini.
Drive in style in Dubai to reach the Marina, a bustling district that showcases the city’s modern side. Even though part of it is still a construction site, what is terminated is incredible. Walk along the promenade, admire the stunning yachts, and dine at the waterfront restaurants. The Marina also offers exciting water activities such as yacht cruises and jet skiing.
Dubai Mall
We got lost a couple of times, walked over 16,000 steps, and almost reached the credit card daily cap. Yes, Dubai Mall will take the world to you and definitely have everything you might imagine. With over 1,200 stores, it is the largest mall in the world. Besides shopping, you will be amused by the activities that are within the complex.
From the iconic Dubai Aquarium, the VR Park, KidZania, the ski park and even a rooftop ekart circuit. The mall also boasts a wide selection of dining establishments, from international cuisine to gourmet delights. With its extravagant architecture, indoor waterfall, and world-class attractions, Dubai Mall is a must-visit destination for both shoppers and leisure seekers.
Sky view Deck
The day after our visit to the Burj Khalifa, we went up to the SkyDeck view on top of the Mall. Of course, you might think that after the tallest building in the world, nothing might impress you. Well, nothing is more wrong, as from the sky deck you have the perfect view of the Burj Khalifa, the Mall and the fountains, with on one side the Persian Gulf and to the other the Arabian Desert.

Museum of the Future
We had the perfect view of the Museum of the Future while in our pool in the centre of Dubai. Designed to inspire visitors, it serves as a platform for exploring emerging trends, scientific breakthroughs, and sustainable solutions.
The museum features interactive exhibits, immersive experiences, and thought-provoking displays that highlight advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology. With its futuristic architecture and visionary approach, the Museum of the Future offers a glimpse into the possibilities that lie ahead and ignites the imagination of all who visit.
Discovering Dubai’s Cultural Gems
We might get that you are not interested in the most popular sightseeing of Dubai and want to get deeper into the local culture. Even though the city is made of well-known places, there is still space for hidden gems and cultural locations that can take you even back in time when Dubai was just a traditional village on the Persian Gulf coast side.
Dubai Museum: Uncovering the City’s Heritage
Delve into the history and culture of Dubai at the Dubai Museum, located within the Al Fahidi Fort. Explore the exhibits that showcase the city’s past, from its humble beginnings as a fishing village to its transformation into a global metropolis, attracting millions of tourists every year.
Traditional Souks and Markets
Continuing on the old-fashioned Dubai, we want to inspire you to get out of the comfort of the modern metropolis and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Dubai’s traditional souks and markets. Visit the Gold Souk to marvel at the dazzling displays of gold and precious jewellery, or wander through the Spice Souk and be enchanted by the aromatic scents of exotic spices.
Also, consider that VAT in Dubai is only 5%, so prices for everything might be affected by that, giving you unique bargains. Just saying we spent a lot in Dubai for this very good reason.
Visiting the historical neighbourhood of Al Bastakiya
Step back in time as you wander through the narrow alleyways of Al Bastakiya. This historic neighbourhood showcases traditional Arab architecture and houses numerous art galleries, cafes, and cultural centres. Take the chance to visit the Dubai Coffee Museum, where you can learn about the significance of coffee in Emirati culture, the traditions and what it means when somebody gives you a full cup of coffee. We don’t want to spoil that, but look out for our next coffee cup story.

Indulging in Dubai’s Shopping Paradise
- The Dubai Mall
- Outlet Malls in Dubai
The Dubai Mall: A Shopper’s Paradise
My credit card is still crying, together with our feet, after over 16,000 steps in a single day roaming around Dubai Mall. This is the biggest shopping centre we have seen; believe us, we have experienced Bangkok sites which are massive too, but different. In fact, Dubai Mall is one of the world’s largest shopping destinations. With over 1,200 retail outlets, including high-end fashion brands and iconic department stores, it’s a haven for shopaholics.
While planning a stopover in Dubai, you must visit the Mall, as it is not just for shopping but is an experience in itself. The Mall offers incredible attractions within, from an instagrammable aquarium with a sustainable underwater zoo and a 48-metre long Aquarium tunnel that takes you 11 metres under the surface. The Mall also hosts a waterfall indoor, smaller but comparable to Changi Airport in Singapore, a fountain show outdoor, and indoor ski facilities to recreate the winter season in one of the hottest countries in the world.
Outlet Malls and Bargain Hunting Tips
We stepped into Dubai Mall and already had bags on our wrists. Dubai can make you spend money just staring at windows, and this is mostly because of the bargains offered. However, you can find bargains everywhere, and many shopping malls are offering discounted designer brands, tech outlets and more.
Places like Dubai Outlet Village and The Outlet Village at Jebel Ali offer a wide selection of fashion, accessories, and home decor items at discounted prices. Remember to watch for seasonal sales and promotions to score even better deals.
Culinary Delights: Experiencing Dubai’s Food Scene

- Traditional Emirati cuisine
- Enjoy the international restaurants in Dubai
- Participate in food festivals and special events
Sampling traditional Emirati cuisine
Treat your taste buds to a gastronomic journey through Emirati cuisine. Indulge in dishes such as shawarma, mandi, and lamb machbous that showcase the region’s rich flavours and aromatic spices. Visit local restaurants like Al Fanar Restaurant and Cafe for an authentic Emirati dining experience.
International gastronomic experiences in Dubai
Dubai is a melting pot of cultures, reflected in its diverse culinary scene. You can spend a layover in Dubai experiencing food from Asia, Europe, South America or even Africa without taking another flight. Everything is world-class, attracting the best chefs from around the world. Explore the city’s international restaurants that offer a range of cuisines, from Mediterranean and Asian fusion to Michelin-starred fine dining.
Don’t miss the opportunity to dine at Nobu Dubai, renowned for its exceptional Japanese cuisine. If you are a budget-conscious traveller, we suggest enjoying a meal at Bab Al Mansour, offering a mid-range menu within a Moroccan-style setting that is worth millions of pictures for your Ig feed. By the way, check out our photos from Dubai on Instagram.
Food Festivals and Events
Dubai hosts various food festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating the city’s culinary delights. The Dubai Food Festival and Taste of Dubai are must-visit events where you can sample a wide array of dishes, attend cooking demonstrations, and enjoy live entertainment.

Thrilling Adventures in Dubai
How often have we said that Dubai was the adventure of a lifetime? Everything within the city and beyond seems built up to impress you. We had such a great time while on a staycation in Dubai, having fun on the Beduin’s footprints through the Arabian Desert with Platinum Heritage, one of the best companies in the world.
However, Dubai is not only desert but also water sports and activities, thrilling skydiving over the Palm, helicopter rides and more. Check out below the most engaging activities in Dubai while on a stepover.

Desert Safaris on the Bedouin Footsteps
Of course, one of the main highlights of our adventure in Dubai was the exhilarating desert safari. Our guide drove through the vast dunes of the Arabian desert, giving us a unique adrenaline experience. Navigating through the golden landscape, a vintage Land Rover will rush through wild animals and the National Park on the boundaries of Dubai on a thrilling dune-bashing ride.
Our adventure ended the best way possible, arriving at a refined bedouin camp in the middle of the dunes. The team at Platinum Heritage makes the impossible possible, inviting you as a guest and not merely a client. Enjoy a perfect 4-course meal and local drinks and watch the heritage show. Why did we enjoy that so much? Because they have created the perfect environment to make a traditional tour engaging and sustainable.
Skydiving in Dubai
For the ultimate adrenaline rush, try skydiving over Dubai’s iconic landmarks. Plummet through the skies and witness breathtaking views of Palm Jumeirah and the city’s skyline. Check the endless possibilities of this unique activity in Dubai. If skydiving isn’t your cup of tea, consider other aerial activities, such as parasailing or hot air balloon rides, for a unique perspective of Dubai.
Even though you are visiting Dubai for a short stopover, you should try skydiving on top of the world. Check out the availability here.
Water sports in Dubai
We found Dubai more touristy and open to foreigners than Abu Dhabi, which influenced the locals’ culture and openness. You can enjoy the seaside of Dubai, with fantastic water sports and unique activities, and also lounge at one of the many beach resorts.
We bet everything that after a long haul flight, you need to relax, and nothing is better than the glamour of the tropical vibes, fresh drink and nice view.
Check these 5 best beaches in Dubai
- Jumeirah Beach: This was one of the major highlights of visiting the Jumeirah Palm. The location is prestigious, and of course, because just built, it boasts pristine white soft sand, crystal-clear waters, and stunning views of the Burj Al Arab.
- Kite Beach: As the name suggests, Kite Beach is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, particularly kite surfers. This vibrant beach is known for its energetic atmosphere and is a great spot for kiteboarding, paddleboarding, and beach volleyball activities.
- Nikki Beach: This is another beach on the luxurious Pearl Jumeirah island. Nikki Beach is a glamorous beach club offering a unique blend of activities, from relaxing lounges to gourmet cuisine and young vibes with music, lavish sunbeds, and poolside cabanas.
- La Mer Beach: La Mer Beach is another trendy beachfront spot in Jumeirah or a favourite beach area in Dubai. One particular thing about La Mer is its colourful beach huts, palm-fringed promenade, and water play areas; it provides a lively and family-friendly atmosphere. The beach is a complete ambience to spend the whole day in Jumeirah, with many restaurants, cafes, and retail outlets.
- Black Palace Beach: If you are seeking a more secluded and serene beach experience, Black Palace Beach is a hidden gem. Tucked away in Al Sufouh, this unspoiled stretch of shoreline offers tranquillity and breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset in Dubai.
Relax on a short stay in Dubai
Luxury spas and wellness centres
We had a Spa in our hotel (The 25hours Dubai), and let us confess that it was much needed after a long flight from Asia to Europe. We were lucky, I know, but if you don’t have the opportunity to stay in our same hotel, you can always visit one of Dubai’s world-class spas, where you can indulge in rejuvenating treatments, soothing massages, and holistic therapies. Experience pure bliss at the award-winning Talise Spa, located at the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah.

Best beach resorts in Dubai
Again, this paragraph mentions the iconic Jumeirah Palm-shaped district in Dubai for a stepover. The reason is that this place impressed us with the facilities, the high-end services for relaxation and unwinding. While you are in Dubai for a staycation, workation or just a layover, you can go directly to one of the resorts at The Palm, which offers a unique and tranquil retreat a short distance from activities, entertainment and the bustling city centre.
Yoga and meditation retreats in Dubai
We have just briefly mentioned relaxation. As Dubai aims to be the centre of the world, attracting tourists with high offers, you can’t miss looking into yoga and meditation retreats. You will never think that a bustling city might be one of the best places in the world to unwind.
Immerse yourself in a peaceful yoga and meditation retreat. Dubai offers a range of wellness centres and dedicated retreats that provide expert guidance, serene surroundings, and rejuvenating activities to enhance your well-being.
Making the most of your time | Stopover in Dubai
Of course, you can’t experience everything while on a stopover in Dubai; however, you will enjoy the trip even more by managing your time well and prioritising your favourite activities. Below are a few tips to efficiently organise your next trip to Dubai.
Itineraries for short and long layovers
Whether you have a few hours or a few days for your stopover in Dubai, planning your time wisely is essential. Create an itinerary based on your preferences and interests, ensuring that you prioritise the key attractions and activities that you are more passionate about.
If you want to prioritise the activities at Palm Jumeirah, such as the view of the Palm, skydiving, or just relaxing on the beach, you should stay near the airport and reduce the commuting time.
However, for a long stopover in Dubai, we suggest staying within the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall area, so within 2 to 3 metro stops, you are in the centre of the action.
Time management tips for exploring Dubai efficiently
As said before, it’s important to manage your time efficiently to make the most of your stopover. Use public transportation or taxis for quick and convenient travel between attractions, and consider pre-booking tickets (with skip-the-line even better) to popular sites to avoid long queues. We suggest also booking in advance your airport pickup and getting ready to explore Dubai straightaway.
This are a list of activities you can book in advance:
Safety considerations and travel essentials
While Dubai is generally a safe destination, taking necessary precautions is always wise. Ensure you have travel insurance (We use SafetyWings for this kind of trip), always carry a copy of your passport, and keep emergency contact numbers handy. Respect the local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites or public areas. CHECK ALSO OUR REVIEW OF HEYMONDO, ANOTHER GREAT INSURANCE PROVIDER WITH COMPETITIVE RATES.
