Our time in Pai was lovely, and within the many day trips we did through the surroundings, one of the best was definitely Pai Canyon, Thailand. The fantastic natural wonder ranks high on our list of awe-inspiring places in Thailand. This stunning geological formation features narrow ridges, steep drops, and stunning views of the surrounding lush greenery. But if you plan to visit Pai Canyon, you must be prepared.

How to get to Pai Canyon?

Pai Canyon is located about 8 kilometres away from the town of Pai, which is a popular tourist destination in Thailand. The easiest way to get to Pai is by flying into Chiang Mai International Airport and then taking a bus or private transfer to Pai. (Check the cheapest options).

The transfer from Chiang Mai to Pai takes about 3 hours through the narrow turns ( there are more than 300 turns in a few kilometres, which makes Pai a fantastic destination for road trip enthusiasts). Once you’re in Pai, you can hire a scooter or taxi to get to Pai Canyon. However, it’s important to note that the road to Pai Canyon is quite narrow and steep, so if you’re not an experienced driver, it’s best to hire a driver or take a taxi.

The alternative is to rent a car at Chiang Mai Airport and get to Pai comfortably. Check options and prices.

How do I get from Chiang Mai to Pai Canyon?

To go from Chiang Mai to Pai or from Pai to Chiang Mai, you can take the passenger van run by Prempracha Transport (Check the tickets here). We booked our tickets in advance on 12Go Asia.

In fact, Prempracha Transport is the only authorised transport company that services the Pai district. Each van can take up to 13 passengers and 1 driver. The ticket price is 150 Baht one-way. If you have car sickness remember to take a pill half an hour before your trip. Alessia had the best sleep ever without noticing the infinite turns. You can find car sickness pills at any 7-Eleven.

Also, consider booking your tickets in advance and don’t leave them at the last minute. We didn’t book the return from Pai and had to change our plans, taking two different tickets as it was fully booked.

What is the best time to visit Pai Canyon?

Overall the dry season in Northern Thailand runs from November to February. This is the best time to visit Pai Canyon; the weather is mild and dry, making it perfect for exploring the Canyon’s trails and taking in the stunning views.

The Dry season is the peak tourist season in Thailand, and many travellers try to escape the scorching temperature by seeking shelter up north through the soya and rice fields of Pai. However, if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, consider visiting Pai Canyon during the shoulder season, which runs from March to June or September to October.

We visited Pai Canyon at sunset, and it was magical. In our opinion, this is the best place to watch the sunset, as the Big Buddha is perfect instead of the sunrise. The golden hour is the busiest time of the day for Pai Canyon, but we have seen people arriving even after dusk.

Make sure you arrive a little early for the sunset for two reasons; you will have at least half an hour to walk along the narrow ridgeline. If you are brave enough to hike the Pai Canyon, making your way to the climb viewpoint, you might secure your spot in a favourite location further down the rocky platform.

If you are afraid of it, you can just enjoy the view from the first rock formation, which is basically the most crowded place where the pine trees are. Take a few drinks with you; I mean to fully enjoy the vibrant colours and the last sun rays of the day, it is better with a cool drink in your hands.

Visiting Pai Canyon, you can expect to find a network of trails winding through dusty orangy gorges. Everywhere you look is beautiful, from thick forests to small peaks that change colours at different times of the day.

The trails are narrow and steep in some places, so make sure you wear proper footwear and be constantly on guard while exploring. Be prepared for some scrambling and climbing as you will navigate unstable terrain, which is even more difficult after heavy rains.

From this main path, you can choose, depending on your fit, to get the different branches peculiar to dry areas like this. Be careful that many other smaller trails lead to hidden viewpoints and secluded areas of the Canyon.

Well, these come with intricate passageways that might be hard to pass. A visit to Pai Canyon, following the trails, might take anything between 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Ensure you stay hydrated and carry water and a first AID kit with you.

No. Pai Canyon is free to access. We also didn’t pay anything to park the scooter as other attractions in the area. At the entrance, you will find many bars and stands selling drinks and snacks. Avoid people asking for money to access the area, as it is free.

Is Pai Canyon suitable for children?

We saw many children at Pai Canyon, but all were well-guarded by adults. The Canyon is fantastic but can be dangerous for young children. The trails are very steep, narrow and high with gorges. The terrain is dusty and not perfectly stable, so better to practise caution while exploring. If you are visiting Pai Canyon with children, pay close attention to them.

Can you fly the drone at Pai Canyon?

Yes. We flow the drone ourselves while exploring the Canyons of Pai. It is out of the planes and helicopter routes, so there is no harm in flying the drone. Use caution when flying, as the Canyon is often crowded with visitors. Also, consider obtaining authorisation from the Thai Government before flying your drone in Thailand.
