We have been on the other side, with nights unsleep planning and saving money for the dreamy trip. That’s why we are particularly proud of helping you today. Researching for the cheapest places to travel in Asia, for sure, you are stuck with Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and maybe the Philippines and Malaysia.

This guide is a little different, as many place Malaysia on top of their list, but our experience was totally different. That’s why we suggest you also look at smaller and often less popular countries, such as Laos and Sri Lanka. Why is Asia a great destination for budget travellers?

We had a path to grow this blog, but we wanted to maximise our resources. The plan was to stay around Asia for about 6 months and see where we could get to. Even at that time, the only country in Asia we visited was Sri Lanka, and our map was pretty empty for this side of the world.

Overall, Asia is a great destination for budget travellers, and this is for several reasons. Firstly, many countries in Asia have a lower cost of living compared to Western countries. 

This means that accommodation, food, and transportation costs are generally lower, making it an attractive option for those on a tight budget. Additionally, there are many affordable activities and attractions to explore, such as temples, museums, and natural wonders.

Furthermore, many Asian countries have a rich cultural heritage, offering unique experiences and insights into different ways of life. Finally, the region is home to diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic beaches and mountains, providing a range of options for travellers with different interests and budgets.

Thailand | Favourite budget country in Asia

The first country on our guide to the cheapest destinations in Asia is of course, Thailand. This is by far our favourite country, and it’s always a pleasure to come back to Thailand. The land of smiles, as the tourism board advertises the country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. Thailand attracts 30 million tourists per year on average (source: Reuters). We can assure you that there is no shortage of activities, stunning beaches to relax in, remote places to switch off, and adventure to live.

We spent a lot of time in Chiang Mai, which is mostly known as the Digital Nomad Hub of Thailand. Read our guide to Chiang Mai in 3 days. However,  we also love the vibes of Bangkok. The fantastic capital offers incredible nightlife and has some of the most impressive heritage in Asia. Even if you just land in Bangkok, you should spend at least one day. Other places to visit in Thailand are Chiang Rai, Pai, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Budget for Thailand

When it comes to budgeting for Thailand, you can expect to spend around $30-$40 per day for basic expenses such as accommodation, food, and transportation. However, this can vary depending on the region and your travel style. We found the North cheaper than the South, and this is referred to everyday expenses, such as eating out, transportation and in some ways, even accommodation. If you want to save money in Thailand, you should visit the local markets and eat out at the stands. Thai food is top notch.

Thailand is considered a relatively safe destination for travellers, but like any other country, it is important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings. We didn’t feel unsafe in every part of our trip in Thailand. Actually, Alessia always refers to Thailand as one of the best destinations for solo female travellers. However, you must consider that petty theft and scams can occur, particularly in popular tourist areas, so it’s essential to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid flashing valuables in public places.

Most nationalities can enter Thailand without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, while some countries are eligible for visa-free stays of up to 60 days. For longer stays, you will need to apply for a visa in advance or extend your visa while in the country.

We can’t place all the incredible activities of Thailand in one short paragraph, but we will try to summarise some of the best. On top of the course to visit the Thai Islands, write down Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Phuket, Koh Samet and Koh Chang. However, you can have fun even visiting cities and staying away from the crowded beaches.

Bangkok is perfect for a few days if it’s not too hot. You can also get a day trip to Ayutthaya and discover the ancient capital. the cultural hub of Chiang Mai, and the famous temples such as Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho. Other popular activities include trying out Thai street food, experiencing the nightlife in Bangkok, visiting the hill tribes in the north, and taking part in water activities like snorkelling and diving.

Vietnam | Fantastic food and culture

The second spot you must consider visiting in Asia is Vietnam. The country is very cheap and perfect for backpackers. We must say that Vietnam is a very long country, and to fully taste its richness, you should account for at least a month’s stay. We did the loop from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi within 15 days free visa, travelling during the night, and it was very hard, even though it was brilliant.

Embracing an adventure in Vietnam, you will discover the diverse culture, made of 54 recognised ethnic groups and some other minors, which makes Vietnam a very multi-ethnic country. It is cheap to travel to Vietnam and so perfect for budget travellers.

What will cost you a bit more is just transportation because eating out is affordable. You can delve into local food; Pho and Banh Mi are on top of our favourite food to eat in Vietnam. However, to wake you up, nothing is better than an egg coffee, sold for as little as $1.

Expect a mix of urban and rural experiences to offer, with bustling cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and peaceful rural areas like the Mekong Delta and Sapa.

Budget for Vietnam

As said, travelling in Vietnam can be relatively inexpensive, with a budget of around $20-$30 per day for basic expenses like food, accommodations, and transportation. Street food is abundant and can be very affordable, making it a great option for budget you.

We found that less-popular cities like Da Nang and Nha Trang are also cheap on accommodation. We had this fantastic hotel in Nha Trang, near the beach, for just $12 per night. This works out at just $6 per person.

Is it safe to visit Vietnam?

Vietnam is considered a safe country for tourists, but as with any destination, it is important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or travelling at night in buses and trains. Keep a lock or chain with you.

Visa Requirements for Vietnam

We got a 15 days visa holding an EU Passport, but this is also applicable to Canada, US and UK Passport holders. Check the local authority for more information. You can request a visa on arrival once landed; it is a five-minute procedure, and you might be required to board an onward flight. They didn’t ask us anything to us. For longer stays, you will need to apply for a visa in advance; the cost might vary and has been updated many times since 2020; at the time we are writing, it is $15 + taxes.

Some of the best attractions and activities in Vietnam include exploring the ancient city of Hoi An. We suggest staying overnight, or like we did to save some money, booking a night in Da Nang and renting a scooter for the day. Also, you must consider taking a cruise in Halong Bay, trekking in Sapa, visiting the historic Cu Chi tunnels near Ho Chi Minh, and of course, indulging in Vietnamese street food.

Indonesia | Not only Bali

We spent 2 entire months in Indonesia and loved their culture, the pristine landscape and the unique way of living life. Indonesia is the world’s largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands. This is one of the most affordable countries to visit in Asia. Expect to budget about $800 per month, living a minimalist life as a backpacker. The accommodation will be a homestay, and you will travel slowly. 

Food is very affordable if you stick with local products. However, if you travel to Bali, you might indulge a little more in alcohol and Western food, which might raise your budget. We found a cheap local guest house in Seminyak, and it cost us just £250 for an entire month in Bali. It was just a room with a private bathroom, but clean and central. You must account for $20 to $30 per day travelling around Indonesia, and let’s say $30 to $50 to stay in Bali.

Accommodation in the Philippines during the shoulder season goes from little as $5 in a hostel for budget travellers. If you have a tight budget, our suggestion is always to rely on street food, with night markets and food courts to lower your costs.

Most travellers reported petty theft in the major city, Manila, making it a stop on your trip through the country and nothing more. Many friends report that their daily budget in India is half of the price in Thailand. The budget covers accommodation, food, transportation and little shopping, all the basics for a minimal lifestyle.

From the bustling streets of Mumbai to the serene backwaters of Kerala, India has something to offer for every budget traveller.

Budget for India

Getting lost in Indian flavours and landscapes in India can be relatively inexpensive, with a budget of around $20-$30 per day for basic expenses like food, accommodations, and transportation. Street food is also abundant and can be very cheap, making it a great option for budget travellers.

However, if you are coming from Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, make sure the food is cooked well and it’s clean. We aren’t usually prepared like locals for different food preparation, and you don’t want to ruin your trip.

Is it safe to visit India?

India is one of the safest countries in the world. The urban centres and crowded places (where is not crowded in India?) are the most affected by small crimes. There are no reports of big crimes that involve tourists, even because the locals are very nice and take care of travellers.

Visa requirements for India

India has introduced the e-visa, which means you can apply for entry to the country prior to your arrival. Consider, as it is stated by the official website it might require up to 7 days to process it. Visa for India usually allows you to stay in the country for up to 30 days. Just to let you know, as a matter of fact, we were interested in if you are transiting through Indian airports, no visa is required. However, you must remain within the airport precinct.

Cambodia | Southeast Asian country

We had such a pleasant time travelling to Cambodia. Actually, I started to write this guide on the bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. One of the best highlights of our Cambodian trip. It was raining heavily on the road that cut the country in two halves. The bus was plenty, and the sky was hungry. As usual, after the rain came the wonderful sunset that will be forever in our memories.

Cambodia is fantastic and is perfect for an overland trip in South East Asia. In fact, you can cross the borders by land from Thailand and Laos on one side and on the other with Vietnam. For many budget travellers and backpackers en route in SouthEast Asia is an unmissable stop. Before travelling to Cambodia, we were sceptical about the chances of internal connections, such as buses and trains.

Happy to be wrong, we found Cambodia being a bit more developed than Laos and perfect to explore around. Even though prices were higher compared to Thailand, because the local economy relies on the US $, it is still fairly acceptable. Definitely not one of the cheapest, but still a budget-friendly country in Asia.

Budget for Cambodia

Travelling in Cambodia can be expensive compared to the rest of the Asian countries. We found it reaching and often getting over our daily budget at the time, which was £50 for both of us. If you stick with local food and you know the area, there are still affordable locations, but again, the local economy relies on US dollars, which makes expenses high.

Also, consider that when paying in US$, locals might give you partial or total change in local currency. On the other hand, we found the cost of transportation cheaper than other countries in the same area in Asia. Taking a tuk-tuk from Phnom Penh airport to the centre costs just $3, and you don’t have to negotiate. Overall, Cambodia is the perfect country if you are looking for a budget-friendly destination in Asia. Not just for backpackers.

Is it safe to visit Cambodia?

Cambodia is reported as a safe country; we also have solo female travellers friends that told us they felt welcomed and in no way in danger at any time. The most touristy places are, of course, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, so you will have a look at your belongings, especially in crowded places.

One of the usual scams in Cambodia is regarding money. If you are not familiar with Dollars notes, check this link. Locals and businesses tend to give change in both local currency and dollars. If the change is less than $5, they will give you local currency. Remember to check the current exchange rate.

Visa Requirements for Cambodia

You need a visa to travel to Cambodia. From 2023 you can request your visa online, and it takes about 2 to 5 days to deliver it to your email inbox. The visa is up to 30 days, and by getting an e-visa, you will have a fast track at the immigration once you arrive. When at the border, I (Toti) didn’t have any problem; however, Ale was requested several times why she didn’t print the e-visa.

We recognize that on the e-visa receipt, there is the disclosure to print it, but we didn’t find it before they pointed it out. If you pass the border by land, you can request the Visa on arrival, and the fee is exactly the same. We paid about $36 each.

Even though we are overland experts at this point, passing the border by land a few times, the review on the border between Cambodia and Thailand and Cambodia and Vietnam left us quite disappointed. Check the reviews and make your decision. LINK

Some of the best attractions and activities in Cambodia include exploring the ancient temples of Angkor, visiting the bustling markets of Phnom Penh, relaxing on the beaches of Sihanoukville, hiking to waterfalls in the jungles of Mondulkiri, and experiencing the local culture in Battambang.

Malaysia | Cheapest Asian countries

We must admit we didn’t like Malaysia that much, but we didn’t travel enough to have a clear idea either. Malaysia is one of the most affordable destinations in Asia and also one of the entry ports to the continent. We passed by Kuala Lumpur airport a few times, as it is the connection with Singapore, Australia, Bangkok, India and others.

Even though it is not budget-friendly like the others mentioned above, it is still cheap enough to be considered one of the most affordable destinations to explore backpacking in Asia. The food scene is incredible, the same as for the architecture. Away from the massive capital, you will have small communities and fantastic villages. We are still mesmerised by the beauty of Malacca.

Budget for Malaysia

We found Malaysia slightly more expensive than other Asian countries, but not excessively. Although, if you are just visiting Kuala Lumpur, it will be a costly affair. We couldn’t find a budget accommodation, which was central enough to spend a few days. For budget transport within the country, we found 12Go Asia very reliable and perfect for planning your day trips from KL or movements within the regions.

If you are visiting true Malaysia, away from the touristy spots, prices drop up to 30% more than in the main cities. We loved Malacca and wished to spend a few days more.

Is it safe to visit Malaysia?

Malaysia is generally safe, even though Ale has some perplexities about it. She didn’t feel safe enough to get alone on the streets like in other places we have been.

Many times we felt locals continue staring at us, especially at her. This will not worry you as travellers tend to have different perspectives of places, but this was our experience. We didn’t have any problem, neither walking in crowded streets or at night.

Sri Lanka | Cheapest country

I can write several books about Sri Lanka as my love for this country is endless! Sri Lanka was the first country we visited outside of Europe, and it was also one of our first jobs as a travel blogger. We visited and reported our experience after the tremendous terrorist attack in 2019.

We are short to say that this small island, located in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of India, is unique. The diversity in nature, culture, food and heritage will leave you with memories lasting forever. Food, accommodation and travel are at the cheapest rates in the region. You can cover basic expenses in Sri Lanka with $20 to $40 per day, and this mostly depends on your travel style. You can stay in guest houses for little as $5 per night, and most of the time, this also includes breakfast.

If you are looking for a little bit of lux, you can get a fantastic hotel for $20 a night, which includes breakfast, pool and gym. Tours and attractions are very reasonably priced. Also, food is extremely cheap, with meals from $1/$2. The portions are very generous. The sum of all of that makes Sri Lanka one of the top destinations to traverse if you are looking for cheap Asian countries to visit.

Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka?

We felt very safe in Sri Lanka, even in crowded places like Anuradhapura during a ceremony or climbing Sigiriya on a holiday day. It was crowded, but locals are so amicable that you will stop and talk with them several times or take photos with them. However, we always suggest having travel insurance while exploring Asia. Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka for stays of up to 30 days, while others will need to apply for a visa in advance. Laos | Most underrated country in SouthEast Asia

Laos is the only country in Southeast Asia landlocked; this means that there is no sea or beaches in Laos. Sorry to disappoint you, but it is still a fantastic destination to include in your Asia bucket list.

We were mesmerised by the natural beauty, friendly locals, fantastic Buddhist Temples and richness in heritage and culture of Laos.

Laos is one the most affordable countries in Asia, even though, like Cambodia, rely on $. There has been heavy investment by China, which changed the landscape and the connection in the last 10 years. Most seasoned travellers refer to Laos as it was Thailand 20 years ago. We can’t agree or deny it, but we can say that Laos looks like Koh Lanta, and so we see how it can be in a few years.

If you only travel to Vientiane, the Capital, you will see a town that is becoming a city. Many constructions and shops opened in Vientiane, but almost nothing in the countryside. We were very surprised by the beauty of Luang Prabang and by the natural beauty surrounding Vang Vieng. Also, note that our trip in Laos started by land, crossing the border from Thailand and cruising on the Mekong River for two days.

Budget for Laos

We travelled to Laos on a budget, and it wasn’t hard to stick with the daily line. We spent less than $50 per two people, including accommodation, meals and activities. Maybe the transportation, together with the accommodations, were the highest voice on our balance, but this came because we tried to balance time-consuming activities with activities.

We opted for the new trains, which cost about 50% more than regular transport but take just one hour to connect you through Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng – Vientiane,  compared to 6/7 hour bumpy buses. In Laos, you will find plenty of opportunities for street food which lower your budget. Apart from our two nights while cruising on the Mekong River, we had pleasant accommodations everywhere and also tried a hostel in Vientiane.

Is it safe to visit Laos

Together with Thailand, Laos was the safest country we have visited. The locals are smiley and happy to see you around. Even when I woke up during the night to enjoy the traditional Alms Giving was safe through the streets. There are many lights within big cities, fewer in the countryside, and none around Vang Vieng. However, use caution if you rent the scooter, as animals cross the streets unnoticed.

Visa Requirements for Laos

Tourist visas are typically valid for 30 days. There are just a few ports of entry that accept visas on arrival. The visa on arrival costs around $30, plus $2 for the official to process your photo and documentation. We paid in Thai Baht during our visit, which was overland from Thailand.

Visas on arrival can be extended for up to 60 days for eligible nations by contacting the Department of Immigration in Vientiane.

As of 2023, there are eight foreign ports that accept e-visas obtained online. The e-visa is processed within three business days, according to the official website. The e-visa for Laos costs $50 plus processing fees for holders of US, UK, European, and Australian passports.

You can expect to explore Nepal with $20-$30 per day. Of course, we are still talking about minimalist travelling and covering basic expenses such as food, accommodations, and transportation. Like in other countries on the continent, street food is the cheapest way to feed yourself, and there are many night markets too. The most expensive voice in your budget list of Nepal is about the activities. If you wish to hike to the base camp of Himalaya, it needs a voice on the budget apart.
