Most travellers start their journey to Nusa Penida from Bali, as it’s the closest major island. To be more precise, the journey most of the time starts from Sanur, which is not just the closest but also a cheaper alternative. By the way, here are the steps to get to Nusa Penida from Bali:
- Choose your port: You have two main options for departure points in Bali: Sanur and Padang Bai. Both offer fast boat services to Nusa Penida.
- Book Your Tickets: Many tour operators and ferry companies provide online booking options. It’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons.
- Ferry Ride: Once you arrive at the port, you’ll board a ferry that will take you to Nusa Penida. Enjoy the scenic journey and keep your camera ready for some stunning views.

Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – If you want to get to Penida faster without passing by Lembongan this is a great option. The ferry is direct and departs from a legit, yet fully functional harbour. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. However, we like this option more than the others, and if you book in advance you might save money. Book through Klook.
Fast Boat and hotel pick-up: If you have just a few days, spending some of them between Bali and the rest of the islands, don’t lose time and spend just about 10$ extra but get it done quickly. This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida with pick-up from your hotel in Bali in an AC van. If you’re already exploring Nusa Lembongan, hopping over to Nusa Penida is a breeze. Regular boat services connect the two islands, making it a convenient option for island-hopping enthusiasts.
Getting around Nusa Penida: scooter or car?
Once you’ve set foot on Nusa Penida, the next question is how to explore the island. The two main options are renting a scooter or a car.
Nusa Penida scooter rental
A little disclaimer: We explored the island on a motorbike, which was fantastic. However, we are experienced drivers who know how to get around South East Asia and Bali. Roads are uneven, like to get to Kelingking Beach or the infamous jungle path toward Tembeling Beach and forest.
- Freedom to Explore: Renting a scooter allows you to explore the island at your own pace. It’s perfect for solo travellers or couples seeking adventure.
- Affordability: Scooter rentals are budget-friendly, and fuel costs are minimal. Even renting a scooter in Penida is a little more expensive than in nearby Bali.
- Parking: We always found scooters easier to park and manoeuvre, even on narrow roads. If you are a couple like us, it takes some practice to drive in two and get through narrow spaces.

- Comfort and Space: Renting a car offers more comfort and space if you’re travelling with a group or have lots of luggage.
- Safety: Cars provide extra stability and safety, which can be reassuring, especially on hilly terrain.
- Air Conditioning: Some parts of Nusa Penida can get scorching hot, so having air conditioning in a car can be a game-changer.
Essential information about Bali and Nusa Penida
- The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The currency exchange is roughly 20,000 IDR (£1.04 | $1.30 | €1.22 | 2.05 AUD).
- There is no Grab, Bolt or Uber on Nusa Penida.
- No gasoline stations are on the island, and you can refill at local shops through glass bottles.
- Get cash before leaving Bali. There are only a few ATMs in Nusa Penida, and these often are out of service or do not have enough cash for weeks.
- The roads are in poor condition! It’s not the ideal spot to learn if you have never driven a motorcycle.
- Distances are enormous, even if it seems like a tiny island. There are no lights on the streets, and there are many stray dogs and other wild animals. Drive cautiously.

Kelingking Beach: A Date with Dinosaur Dreams
Begin your day with a visit to Kelingking Beach, affectionately known as “T-Rex Bay”. This hidden gem boasts a remarkable rock formation strikingly resembling a colossal dinosaur. The turquoise waters that caress the shore create a mesmerising contrast against the rugged cliffs, providing the perfect backdrop for unforgettable photographs. Nature’s wonders await, and your camera will be your best companion.
Our next stop on the itinerary through Nusa Penida is Tembeling Beach and Forest. The road is not the best, but you can do that. Depending on traffic and road conditions, it may take between 30 and 50 minutes. We had to stop for gasoline, so we are not certain of the exact time.
Tembeling Beach and forest
This hidden gem is tucked away along a narrow, winding road, approximately 1.85 miles from the main route. As you navigate this steep, single-lane path, you’ll find yourself enveloped by lush forests, with a sheer drop-off on one side.
The dense foliage may obscure the true depth of the drop, offering an adventure that’s both thrilling and immersive. The drive to the beach is very hard, and I almost melt my strength. I had to leave my motorbike at three quarters of the journey because it was too tense. On the return, I asked a local to drive my bike while Ale was at the back of another.
Usually, the fare for the round-trip journey, along with some wait time at the bottom, typically hovers around 70,000 to 50,000 IDR; bargain hard, they love it. The beach is secluded behind a thick forest. It is still seen as a hidden gem of Nusa Penida because it is difficult to get in.
The water of the two pools is exceptionally blue, and the view of the Ocean is breathtaking. We spent much time on the beach but had about 5 days on the island.
Angel’s Billabong
Continuing your journey along the coast, you’ll discover Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool forged by the relentless power of the Ocean. This tranquil oasis offers a refreshing spot to cool off in the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the island’s raw, untamed beauty.
Be sure to check the tide conditions before taking a dip, but even if swimming isn’t on the agenda, the sheer natural beauty of this location will leave you in awe.
Broken Beach

Diamond Beach
Begin your day with a trip to Diamond Beach, one of the best photo spots of Nusa Penida. The beach of rock diamonds is a slice of paradise famous for its pristine white sand and the challenging stairway leading down to the shore.
The descent may be a bit steep, but the reward is worth it. Once you reach the beach, you’ll be mesmerised by the untouched beauty surrounding you. Diamond Beach is a must-visit destination whether you’re sunbathing, swimming, or simply taking in the views.
Atuh Beach
We loved Atuh Beach more than Diamond Beach. You sweat less to get down to this shoreline than you do to enjoy the tropical vibes of the above Diamond Beach. Atuh Beach, with its tranquil waters and abundant amenities, starkly contrasts some of the island’s more rugged coastlines. It’s an ideal spot for swimming and snorkelling, and you’ll find numerous warungs (small local eateries) lining the beach. You can savour seafood, indulge in fruit shakes, or sip on a cold Bintang beer here.
For a mere 50,000 IDR, you can rent two comfortable lounge chairs complete with an umbrella—a perfect setup to enjoy a leisurely lunch while away a blissful afternoon on the shores of Nusa Penida.
Thousand Islands Viewpoint: Sunset Serenity

- Relax at Chill Penida: One of the best places we enjoyed while exploring Nusa Penida for three days was the Chill. The Bar and restaurant are right before the shore, offering a crazy, beautiful infinity pool. You can grab a drink, reply to some emails, or refresh on your last day on the island.

We decided to leave our scooter behind and cover the last quarter-mile on foot during our visit.
