Sorrento is located on the northern end of the Amalfi Coast in Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is easy to reach by car, train (the Vesuviana) and even ferry from the Molo Beverello.
If you are flying into Naples, Sorrento is about 50 kilometres (31 miles) away from the Naples International Airport. There are plenty of taxis and even a few daily buses that will get you to Sorrento. We suggest booking your journey in advance as the queue might be long, especially if you are visiting Italy in summer.
Best time to visit Sorrento
Sorrento is a popular destination for tourists year-round, but the best time to visit, in our opinion, is away from the peak season. Sorrento is very crowded from May to September, making your trip less enjoyable.
During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, and the sea is warm enough for swimming. However, the crowds can be overwhelming, and prices for accommodation and other services are typically higher.
If you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, consider visiting Sorrento in the off-season months of October to April. The shoulder season is what we prefer; in fact, every year, we visit our families around this period. However, even though it is shoulder season, you might be lucky and enjoy the beaches like the locals do. Sorrento is a very active cultural hub with many events all year round.

Positano is a small town located on the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. Known for its colourful houses and steep, narrow streets, the picturesque village is a popular destination for couples and honeymooners. You might have seen some of the best photos on the gram.
The town’s charm lies in its picturesque location on a cliff overlooking the sea. While staying in Positano, you must walk through the maze of narrow streets filled with boutique shops and restaurants.
Where is Positano
Positano is a picturesque town located on the southern end of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It is approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) southeast of Naples. It is the mid-way between Sorrento and Amalfi, so you could consider staying here and getting a few day trips on both sides.
If you are flying into Naples, Positano is about 70 kilometres (43 miles) away from the Naples International Airport. While there is a chance to reach Positano by public transport, it is a long journey, and in most cases, you have to change in Sorrento.

Best time to visit Positano
The peak tourist season in Positano is from May to September, with July and August being the busiest months. And this is the time we suggest avoiding. On the contrary, we love the period that goes from mid-September onwards, as there are fewer people and primarily locals. Even so, the town is so small that even during the weekend in the shoulder season, it seems overcrowded.
Overall, spring, from March to May, is also an excellent time to visit Positano if you enjoy mild temperatures and blooming nature. The town is less crowded during this time, and you can enjoy the beautiful colours of spring. Also, Spring in Positano is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities, and this does not mean only beaches but also hiking.

Getting around Positano can be challenging due to its steep hills and narrow streets. Walking is the most common mode of transportation, but small buses and taxis are also available. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can rent a scooter for the proper Italian lifestyle vibes or a boat in Spiaggia Grande to explore the coastline and the most hidden beaches of Amalfi Coast.
How to get around Sorrento:
Sorrento is a small town that can be easily explored on foot. The lovely city centre is pedestrian only during the weekends, and the old town’s narrow streets are perfect for a stroll every day. However, if you want to venture further, buses and trains are available. The Circumvesuviana train line connects Sorrento to Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum Ruins. Taxis are also available, but they can be very expensive.
You can go from Sorrento to Positano by Ferry
Worth to mention that you can reach Positano from Sorrento and vice versa by ferry. Every day several boats and companies depart from Sorrento Harbour to Positano Spiaggia Grande. This service mainly runs during the peak season and starts from 1st April onwards. However, the weather and sea conditions might affect the schedule. Check the timetable and departures.

This time Positano wins! Both locations have stunning coastlines, but when it comes to beaches, Positano has the edge. The picturesque cliffside town has several beaches unique in the world, and some of them accessible only from the sea. On top of all the beaches in Positano, the easy to reach are Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo Beach.
Sorrento, instead, has a rocky coastline with fewer sandy beaches. However, Sorrento does have some great swimming spots, like Marina Grande and Bagni della Regina Giovanna. This last spot is incredible, and we were stunned to reach it by boat from Sorrento Harbour. So, even though this challenge, “Sorrento Vs Positano”, sees the last advantage, Sorrento’s location and facilities are still on top of our preferences.

Sorrento or Positano for the Food Scene?
Both Positano and Sorrento have incredible food scenes that are heavily influenced by the fresh seafood and local ingredients of the Amalfi Coast. Local cuisine is similar. However, if you’re looking for a more diverse culinary experience, Sorrento may be the better choice. Sorrento offers a wider variety of dining options, from traditional Italian cuisine to international dishes, and has more affordable options than Positano.
On the other hand, Positano is known for its upscale restaurants with breathtaking views and high-quality cuisine, making it an excellent choice for a special occasion or romantic dinner. You can get to Positano in less than an hour by taking the ferry. But in the meantime, it is more centrally located with Naples Province and other attractions such as Pompeii, Vesuvius and Amalfi.
