Best time to visit Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is beautiful to visit any time of the year, but the best months are around Spring. From the month of April to May/early June, Dubrovnik has fewer tourists than in the summer months.

We were there off-season, and we still had to wake up for sunrise to be able to shoot a couple of nice pictures. The weather, even in April, was amazing!

We had a warm temperature, and we enjoyed the surroundings without jackets which were amazing. If you’re visiting Dubrovnik in spring, you won’t be able to dip into the sea as the water will be freezing.

How to get around Dubrovnik

BY WALK

One of the best ways to discover secret passages and hidden corners is by walking around the Old Town and getting lost. You can easily walk inside the walls of Dubrovnik and be able to explore every part of the city.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

We arrived in Dubrovnik from Zagreb by bus, and the connection was pretty good. The overnight bus left us at the Dubrovnik bus station where we were able to catch the local bus to Pile Gate (Dubrovnik Gate Entrance to the Old Town). On most of the buses in Croatia, you can buy the bus ticket onboard. (It’s cheaper than buying it at the local kiosk).

FLIGHT

There are many flights operating from the UK and the rest of Europe to Dubrovnik, and if you plan your Croatia itinerary in advance, you might be able to find cheap flights. Dubrovnik airport is located a bit far away from the city centre, right after the city of Cavtat. Airport shuttle buses are running seven days a week that will be able to bring you to the old town. The tickets are 55kn (around 7 euros and 50 cents) each way.

BY CAR

If you are a road trip lover, renting a car in Croatia is something that we suggest you do. Depending on your itinerary, you can easily reach Dubrovnik from almost everywhere. Remember that, to reach Dubrovnik, you will need to pass the Bosnia border, where you are required to show your passport. It’s a smooth process but just remember to have all your documents ready.

Old Town

Let’s start our Dubrovnik Instagram spots itinerary with the Old Town. I mean, this part of the city is the heart of Dubrovnik and can’t be missed. From the first moment you walk past Pile Gate, you will be speechless by the beauty of the Old Town.

Make sure you stroll around every single corner of the old town, get lost and explore its gorgeous narrow streets.

There will be a few stairs, but trust us that it will be absolutely worth it. We woke up for sunrise to be able to enjoy the Old Town a bit more and to snap the best photo spots in Dubrovnik, in fact, you can see the results from our pictures below.

Old Town Basketball Court

You can’t leave Dubrovnik without visiting the City Walls and photographing the famous basketball courts, which it was named one of the best ones in the entire World. Those who are lucky to play basketball in City Wall Rooftop Court in Dubrovnik can experience the incredible view over the city of Dubrovnik and the view of the Adriatic sea.

I mean, not every day you can witness something similar. The only way to photograph the basketball court is by buying the city wall guided tour or ticket entrance.

Dubrovnik City Walls

For sure, a tour of the City Walls will give you access to some incredible photo spots in Dubrovnik.  You will find incredible opportunities and different perspectives that will make your trip to Dubrovnik remarkable. The walls are dated back to the 7th century, and part of the walls and the Old Town are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1979. With the many Dubrovnik Instagram spots, this is for sure our favourite location. If you are a photography lover, you will understand what we are talking about. Walking along the entire path will give you many instagrammable spots in Dubrovnik.

Things to know about Dubrovnik City Walls

The best time to walk around the City Walls is early in the morning. If you want photos with fewer people around (avoid post-production hassles), be the first to get in and have in mind some pictures you wish to take.

Depending on when you are visiting Dubrovnik, you can plan your day in advance as during the summer months, even if you’re visiting the walls at 8.30 AM, most likely, you will find people already queuing. Remember that Dubrovnik reaches high temperatures during summer, and on the top of the walls, there are no shades, so try to avoid peak times. Buy your ticket in advance here

Pile Gate

From the first moment that you arrive in Dubrovnik, the entrance to the Old Town is from Pile Gate. For sure, during your first day, you will realise how tourist this city is but don’t worry, you will still be able to take your Instagram photos in Dubrovnik.

Shooting during sunrise was the best thing we could do as we were able to enjoy every single corner of the city and pay attention to photographic spots that we couldn’t spot before.

Built in the 15th century, Pile Gate used to have a wooden drawbridge which used to be pulled up during the night to prevent unknown guests in the mediaeval city. Set your alarm at 6 AM, have your Dubrovnik Instagram Spots Map ready and roam around when the city is still asleep.

Pile gate entrance in Dubrovnik, one of the most beautiful places in Dubrovnik

Mount Srd

This is one of the most beautiful places in Dubrovnik. Thanks to its stunning view over the city, Mount Srd is one of the best Dubrovnik sunrise spots

I think that there is no other place in Dubrovnik like this that offers such a dreamy view. We mentioned earlier that this photo spot in Dubrovnik is amazing for sunrise, but if you’re a sunset lover, you might want to check it out. If you’re not into hiking to reach the top early in the morning, don’t worry, as Mount Srd for sunset is just magical. It’s a popular spot like Bunker del Carmel in Barcelona. It offers some of the best photos of Dubrovnik, with a unique panorama ideal for enjoying the moment.

Tips | If you’re travelling in Croatia on a budget, we suggest buying a couple of beers and snacks at the local supermarket and doing an afternoon aperitif while waiting for the sunset to start on the top of Mount Srd.

How to reach Mount Srd

CABLE CAR

This might be the easiest way to reach Mount Srd. Depending on when you are visiting Dubrovnik, the Cable car runs from the 9th of April till October from 9 AM until 9 PM. During Winter months, from November to March, the cable car is closed for maintenance, and the wind is too strong to run it.

  • Adult round trip ticket – 220kn – £24.45 – $31.39
  • Adult one-way ticket -110kn – £12.22 – $15.70
  • Children (4-12 years old) round trip ticket – 50kn – £5.56 – $7.13

  • Children up to 4 – Free

For more information, you can check the Dubrovnik Cable Car website here.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You will need to walk uphill from this village for around 20-30 minutes. At least, you kind of avoid a little path uphill and use the bus to get closer to the summit. The bus tickets are available to purchase onboard, so don’t rush to buy them in advance.

HIKING

If you’re looking for a little hike during your Dubrovnik itinerary, you will be happy to know that to reach Mount Srd, there is a hike that you can do. For some people, it can feel like it’s climbing but anyway, make sure you come prepared if you wish to go out the Mount. The path starts just off the main road, Jadranska Cesra, where you will find the Mount Srd trailhead. Along your way, you will find many signs to help you reach the summit. Follow Imperial Srd to make your way up to the top.

Best photo spots in Dubrovnik

The view of Dubrovnik Old Town from Fort Lovrijena

Fort Lovrijenac

One of the most incredible photo spots in Dubrovnik is for sure Fort Lovrijenac. We were so happy to shoot around the fort at 7 AM as we had the entire place for ourselves. We managed to get some pictures even on the famous stairs that go down the fort that you can see in the series Game of Thrones.

Located just outside the Old Town City walls, this gorgeous fortress is one of the most instagrammable places in Dubrovnik, which offers an incredible view over the historic centre. Before heading up to the fort, make sure you stop along the path and snap a few pictures from the bottom, as from there, the landscape is incredible.

The history behind Fort Lovrijenac goes back to the 11th century when the Venetians attempted to build a fort in the same spot where this one currently stands. The city’s people beat them; otherwise, they would have kept Dubrovnik under their power.

Jesuit Stairs

Calling all Game of Thrones lovers, you will recognise this spot. Considered one of the best Dubrovnik Instagram spots, Jesuit Stairs is an incredible place where you can play around with perspectives. more attractive locations for locals and tourists.

These Baroque stairs are located within the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik and were modelled after the Spanish Steps in Rome. Despite being a popular spot thanks to Game of Thrones, Jesuit Stairs can be a cool place where to take some pictures. To be honest, we only started watching GOT after we got back from Croatia, and while there, we loved every single corner without knowing the film locations.

Once you finish shooting around the Jesuit Stairs, make your way up to this staircase and reach St. Ignatius Church. Make sure you take a snap of the beautiful exterior as it will leave you speechless.

Jesuit Stairs - the famous film location of Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik Croatia

Onofrio’s Fountain

From the first moment you step inside Pile Gate, after going down the stairs that will bring you inside the city walls, you will see Onofrio’s Fountain, known as the Onofrijeva Fountain.  Located opposite the Clock Tower, Onofrio’s Fountain was designed in 1438 by an Italian architect from Naples. Today, it’s a tourist attraction thanks to its ice-cold water, attracting many people, especially during hot summer days.

If you want to snap your perfect Instagram-worthy pictures in Dubrovnik, we suggest waking up early in the morning and playing around with the withe background and the Clock Tower.

Minceta Tower View

Along with the city walls, Minceta Towers is one of the protecting towers in the old town, in fact, it’s one of the highest points in the defence system. Being one of the highest points in the city, it offers an awesome view of Dubrovnik. If you’re buying your Walls Tour here, you can visit these Instagrammable spots in Dubrovnik while strolling around during your visit to the Old Town Walls

Stradun is the main street in Dubrovnik, right in the centre of the old town

Stradun | Old Town Main Street

Stradun is the main street of Dubrovnik and connects Pile Gate, the eastern entrance, with Ploce Gate, the western one. If you’re planning your Dubrovnik Instagram spots map, Stradun needs to be on your list. The only way to get a good shot is in the early morning when no one or only fewer people are around. We arrived in Dubrovnik in the afternoon and due to the crowds, we didn’t notice the beauty of this spot.

If you’re visiting the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik you will get the chance to photograph Stradun from the above, which the perspective is not bad at all. Book your ticket!

The entrance of St. Blaise's Church in dubrovnik, enjoy Luza square and the many attractions around Dubrovnik

Luza Square

Located at the east end of the Stradun, Luza Square is the main one in the Old Town. Thanks to its numerous bars and restaurants, this place tends to get really busy from mid-morning till late in the evening.

Despite being super busy, Luza Square is considered one of the most instagrammable places in Dubrovnik, thanks to its gorgeous Church of Saint Blaise adoring the entire square. Grab a coffee in one of the closest bars, enjoy the surroundings and admire the incredible square.

Rector Palace is one of the main attraction of Dubrovnik, we woke up very early to find no one around and get the best shot of Dubrovnik

Rector’s Palace

We only admired this gorgeous palace when we decided to go out early in the morning to take some pictures. Sometimes, when the city is overwhelming, you don’t realise all the beauty surrounding you. Well, this was the case for Rector’s Palace. You can admire the incredible facade from the outside and take a few pictures of the gorgeous arcades. This building functioned as a palace from the 14th century till the early 1800s.

Thanks to its architectural mix of renaissance, gothic and baroque, Rector’s Palace is one of the most stunning buildings in Dubrovnik. Make sure you step inside the Palace and admire the incredible interiors. There is a small fee to pay to visit the inside, and you can purchase your tickets here.

Buza Bar

You can’t leave Dubrovnik without visiting and grabbing a beer at Buza Bar. These famous Instagram spots in Dubrovnik became popular among locals and tourists. Thanks to its stunning view and incredible vibes, Buza Bar is the perfect place to watch the sunset in Dubrovnik. You’re literally above the sea, and in front of you, there is only the Adriatic Sea.

The bar is located on the side of a cliff outside the Old Town walls where to get in, you need to walk through a small door that opens up to the bar. For sure, Buza Bar is one of the most magical places ever so make sure you grab your camera and some cash and make your way to the bar before sunset.

TIPS: The bar only accepts cash!

Old Town Port

Located inside Dubrovnik Walls, Old Town Port is another incredible spot that you can’t miss. Thanks to its lovely landscape and waterfront, the old town port is considered one of the most instagrammable places in Dubrovnik. From here, you can organise a day trip from Dubrovnik to Lokrum island and discover a new location in just 15 minutes by ferry.

Depending on when you will be visiting Dubrovnik, you can catch the sunset from the old town port and enjoy this magical moment when the sun goes down, and the stars start to appear in the sky.

If you really want to organise it properly, go to a local supermarket and grab a couple of Croatian beers with some snacks. It will make a difference.

Dubrovnik Instagram Spots

Clock tower in the back ground and a little walk from Luza Square to Pile Gate in Dubrovnik, early morning start for Italian Trip Abroad Team to get the most instagrammable spots in Dubrovnik

Clock Tower

Before we mentioned Stradun, the main street in the old town, well, now it’s time to discover another Dubrovnik Instagram spot which is located at the end of the main street, the clock tower. If you are lucky and not many people are around, you will be able to snap a few nice pictures with the clock tower behind you.

During our first day, we found it really difficult as it was in the middle of the afternoon, and that’s why we preferred to save this location and come back in the morning.

Being able to stroll around Dubrovnik with almost no one around is one of the best things to do, especially if you’re visiting the city during the summer months.

Often left behind on the tourists map, Ploce Gate is on the opposite side of the famous Pile Gate. Awesome and intact, the architecture shows its best at this entrance with a scenic bridge that overlooks the bay. Enjoy another photo spot in Dubrovnik

Ploce Gate

Located in the western part of the city walls, Ploce Gate is another entrance to Dubrovnik city centre. Less busy than Pile Gate, Ploce Gate will allow you to take some nice pictures. This entrance is mainly used for locals who are arranging the food market in the morning, and while we were shooting, we had to be fast as people were coming in and out at that time.

With all the four entrances to the old town, you need to make sure that you visit Ploce Gate as for us, it was one of the most fascinating.

Book your Dubrovnik Old town walking tour!

Dominican Monastery

Located in the eastern part of the city, close to Ploce Gate, Dominican Monastery is one of the most important architectural parts of Dubrovnik. The monastery museum showcases incredible paintings, jewellery, and artefacts from the city’s rich history.

For sure, it’s a must-see in Dubrovnik. As it’s one of the most popular Game of Thrones filming locations, Dominican Monastery needs to be on your Dubrovnik Instagram spots itinerary.

Book your game of thrones tour:

Banje Beach

If you’re visiting Croatia in summer and making your way to Dubrovnik, it’s now time to talk about beaches. Banje Beach is one of the best beaches in Dubrovnik, and regardless of the many tourists, this beach is one of the most insta-worthy locations in Dubrovnik.

If you’re travelling off-season, you will be able to walk around freely and take beautiful pictures. Even if you have a drone, you will get nice shots of Banje Beach with the old city as your background without many people around.

Dubrovnik West Harbour is a quintessential place to discover in Dubrovnik. Away from the crowds of the old town, you need to get lost in the narrow streets outside the city walls, Fort Lovrijenac on the background and awesome blue turquoise water with a fantastic beach in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik West Harbour

I think there is no better place to take pictures than Dubrovnik West Harbour. If you are a Game of Thrones lover, you will recognise this spot from the second season.

Right in the middle between Fort Lovrijenac and the city walls, the West Harbour is one of the most instagrammable places in Dubrovnik. Dip your feet inside the water and enjoy an early sunrise from this spot.

The famous hidden gem of Dubrovnik, between the walls and looking at the east harbour

Dubrovnik Harbour and Castle Hidden Gems

Like every good photography guide; we couldn’t leave you without some hidden gems in Dubrovnik. From the top of Ul. Iza Grada, the main parking space in the walled city, will have a fantastic view of the Harbour framed between the white brick stones of the city walls.

The Iza Grada Dubrovnik is difficult to frame correctly, and we thought a lot about using the drone to get it perfect. Some of the best Dubrovnik Instagram spots are often around the city walls, more than inside, and you have to go deep into the old town to find them. We realised that locals get out of the Old town before the evening. Locals stay in the actual new city of Dubrovnik, which has many amenities and definitely lower prices than the old town in terms of accommodations, groceries and restaurants.

u003cstrongu003eIs Dubrovnik expensive?u003c/strongu003e

Dubrovnik is totally affordable. Coming from London, for us, it was cheap as we are used to a completely different lifestyle. We found a bit more overpriced in the restaurants inside the City Walls. One day, we went outside the walls for dinner, and it was way cheaper.

u003cstrongu003eWhich is better, Hvar or Dubrovnik?u003c/strongu003e

Hvar and Dubrovnik are completely different. The architecture and the history behind Dubrovnik are immense and can’t be compared to any other city. Despite that, Hvar for us is much better. From its incredible viewpoint and local food, Hvar welcomes thousands of tourists from all over the world. If we had to choose which city we’d like to come back to right now, it would be Hvar.

u003cstrongu003eWhat is Dubrovnik famous for? u003c/strongu003e
