Dubrovnik is a pleasant city worth visiting while escaping the ordinary. The UNESCO world heritage site is known for its fabulous spots and for being the set of Games of Thrones. However, in preparation for the trip, many travellers forget to check some basic but essential information about Croatia. So, before getting into our 3 days in Dubrovnik itinerary, check our tips and suggestions.

Croatia Currency

Croatia is part of the EU; however, not yet part of the economic side of it and has its currency. The local currency is Kuna, but in many places, you can pay in Euro and receive Kuna in exchange. Remember that in Dubrovnik, you can pay by card everywhere, and there’s no need to stock up on cash.

Croatia is outside the Schengen Area

Even though there are talks (July 2022), Croatia is set to become a member of the Schengen Area by 2024 and might be joining earlier in 2023.

The country on the Adriatic is what is near Italy and is often used by Americans to renew their visas and continuously stay in Europe. (By the way, check out our comparison between living in Italy and the USA).

Before getting their residency in one of the Eu countries, we have many friends who go back and forth from Croatia, Hungary and the other countries outside the border-free travel zone.

Yes. Dubrovnik’s old town is beautiful like no other. We placed Dubrovnik among some of the best landmarks to visit in Europe. The cobblestone and narrow streets look just fabulous, and the view of the city from above or from the sea is unbelievable. You should create your own Croatia itinerary, including Dubrovnik, even just for a day or a stop while island hopping.

Croatia is an incredible destination all year round; however, you should plan carefully as sometimes the remarkable places are more crowded than others.

Visiting the coasts of Croatia in Summer will be nearly a nightmare for somebody that doesn’t like to be surrounded by many people. However, visiting in the shoulder season or spring will give Croatia a different feeling and vibe.

There are two parts of the year we feel suggest to you, besides visiting Croatia in summer, you should consider April and May, and then September and October. If you want to go for a broad road trip through Croatia, April and October are the best months. However, you should consider May and September if you want to start feeling the summer or get the best of Croatia beaches.

The most popular month sees Croatia crowded with vacationers and people from cruise ships. Believe us, we visited Croatia at first in April, and it was still ok, even though from midday with cruise shippers crowding the streets of Dubrovnik, we were looking for a quiet place.

Also, the period you visit Croatia can impact your budget. In high season the accommodation options are limited as people book in advance (even 2-3 months earlier, if not more), and most of them are expensive. Dubrovnik is the most peaceful and affordable for lodging from December through March. Consider planning your winter trip to Dubrovnik for the low season if you’re trying to save money.

Dubrovnik is in the Balkan area and part of Croatia; even if you want to reach the Unesco world heritage site by land, you must pass the border with Bosnia and get back into Croatia.

The city of Dubrovnik was once known as Ragusa, the Italian name and one of the most wealthy cities in Dalmatia. Surrounded by crystal clear water, fabulous islands on the Adriatic side and thick forest inland, it is a unique destination in Europe.

Thanks to its position, Dubrovnik has a lovely climate that makes the city very hot from April until the end of September and chills in winter. Moreover, the position of Dubrovnik is particular, offering the easiest way to reach nearby countries such as Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina. Therefore, spending 3 days in Dubrovnik, Croatia, is the best holiday you can have in the Balkans. You will spend most of your days around the old town Dubrovnik and the old town Porto, the centrepieces of the city. However, the modern Dubrovnik is 10 minutes by car from the old gate and is the arrival point for ferries, buses and transport from the airport.

There is such a wide variety of modes of travel from Split to Dubrovnik that it might be hard to choose one for your trip! Driving from Split to Dubrovnik is recommended to immerse in the Eurotrip fully. The route is straightforward and takes only around 4 hours.

Taking a taxi is another popular way of getting to Dubrovnik. Backpack travellers can have a budget-friendly trip by taking a bus from Split to Dubrovnik!

The white-walled city of Dubrovnik is walkable and a pedestrian area. Besides the flat street with the main sightseeing of Dubrovnik, a maze of steep steps and a narrow passageway takes you to the most affordable accommodations.

Many tours depart from the old town harbour if you want to explore the surrounding islands. Instead, if you want to take the ferry to Korcula, Hvar and other islands, you have to take them from the Ferry terminal, about a 20 minutes bus ride from Dubrovnik’s old town.

While visiting Dubrovnik, getting around shouldn’t be a problem. Since the Old Town isn’t very big, you won’t be travelling very far. But be aware that there are numerous stairs, and to reach the Buza Bar or other viewpoints, it’s hard to carry water with you if visiting Croatia in summer.

As the Old Town is a car-free area, you can walk anywhere. However, if you need to travel outside of the Old Town, you might discover that taking public transportation is a practical and worthwhile alternative. We made a fantastic day trip to Cavtat just using the local bus. Tickets start from 12 HRK, and you can purchase these from the Tak Kiosk or from the driver. For whatever reason, we found cheaper purchasing from the driver. Also, you can reach the top of Mount Srd using the bus or hiking.

From Dubrovnik Ferry terminal or Bus depot to Old Town

We arrived in Dubrovnik by bus from Zagreb (a long journey of about 11 hours overnight with flixbus, passing the border with Bosnia, worth it), and the stop was at Port Gruz. The cruise terminal is close to the bus depot.

Once you arrive at one of these places, you have to walk to the main street and wait at the local bus stop for either 1A, 1B or number 3 buses. The last stop of either one is Pile Gate, the entrance of Dubrovnik’s old town walls.

From Dubrovnik Airport to Old Town

If you arrive in Dubrovnik by plane, to reach the old town will take about 30 minutes by car. There is a shuttle that will cost about 50 HKR one way and 80 HKR return, departing every hour. The bus will stop you at Pile Gate.

The alternative is to book your taxi service in advance. The cost for the service is similar to the shuttle but more convenient and at your own pace. Check the prices and availability.

Are 3 Days Enough In Dubrovnik?

Three days in Dubrovnik are not just enough; they’re perfect for an unforgettable vacation! In three days, you can experience everything from snorkelling in the beautiful Adriatic Sea, strolling and exploring around Old Town, and heading to the beach to end the day! You can also avail yourself of the opportunity of taking a picture on the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones fans, rejoice!

The main takeaway from our experience in Dubrovnik is that the city is best to be explored early in the morning when day trippers and cruises are yet to come. In fact, we had the best time in Dubrovnik, and overall, it was a pleasant stay, mostly because of our sunrise missions.

Dubrovnik City Walls:

The Dubrovnik City Walls are an iconic landmark in Dubrovnik and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These impressive medieval fortifications surround the old town, covering about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) and reaching heights of up to 82 feet (25 meters).

The construction of the walls began in the 9th century, but the majority of what we see today dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The walls were constructed to safeguard the city against invasions and attacks.

Stradun (Placa)

The main street of Dubrovnik’s old town, also referred to as Placa or Stradun, is the city’s central promenade. It runs from Pile Gate to Ploce Gate and has a charming appearance due to being paved with limestone.

The thoroughfare is adorned with sophisticated edifices, retail stores, coffeehouses, and eateries. It acts as the center of communal and artistic existence in Dubrovnik, where inhabitants and tourists converge to relish strolls and diverse activities.

Rector’s Palace

The Cultural Historical Museum is located in the Rector’s Palace, an architectural masterpiece that used to be the residence of the elected rector of the Dubrovnik Republic. Situated in the old town, it’s a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the area.

The palace was initially constructed in the 13th century but has since undergone numerous renovations and additions. The present look, a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, is primarily from the 17th century.

Dubrovnik Cathedral (Assumption Cathedral)

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Dubrovnik Cathedral, holds great religious importance and is the primary worship place in the city. The majestic Baroque-style cathedral is situated in the centre of the historic town.

The cathedral dates back to the 6th century, is home to valuable treasures, such as the remains of the city’s patron saint, St. Blaise. It has undergone numerous reconstructions due to damage from earthquakes and fires. The current structure was finished in the 18th century.

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, also referred to as the “Dubrovnik Gibraltar,” is a colossal fortress situated on a 37-meter-high cliff beyond the western walls of the old town. Its primary purpose was to safeguard the city from any possible invaders.

This bastion, constructed in the 11th century, has survived many attacks and sieges. Its strategic position and formidable defensive walls have made it an impregnable fortress.

Day 1 in Dubrovnik, Croatia

The first day in Dubrovnik will be full of beautiful discoveries. After landing in Croatia, you have to reach your accommodation; better if you stay in the old town to optimise the short time available.

This itinerary for Dubrovnik will start in the old town, watching people walking down the street getting a pastry from a local bakery and a cappuccino. 

Our 3-day Dubrovnik itinerary will conduct you through all the best this city offers. You will start day one roaming around the cobblestone streets, walking around the city walls, discovering the beautiful Rector’s Palace and ending the day sipping a drink with the fantastic view of the Dalmatian islands from the Buza bar at sunset.

Dubrovnik Cathedral

This Roman Catholic Cathedral was built as the seat of the Diocese of Dubrovnik and was damaged in the 1991 war. Although the exterior of the building might speak of destruction, the interior is another story. The cathedral is full of beautiful art, stonework, and paintings.

Explore the Dominican Monastery

The Dominican Monastery is a mysterious fortress-looking structure that was built around the same time as the walls around the city. This Roman-Gothic inspired architecture is a sight to behold and explore on your Dubrovnik 3 day itinerary!

Dubrovnik City Walls

The City Walls of Dubrovnik are the city’s oldest and most significant attractions, and it’s not hard to see why! The walls were built between the 12th and 17th centuries and encapsulated the entire city of Old Town. The walls are dotted with forts and overlook the awe-inspiring views of the Adriatic Sea.

Taking a walk around the wall is a treat in itself! You will get the chance to witness the mesmerising waters, local gardens, terracotta roofs, and church tops from an elevated point.

Old Town Stairs

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is relatively flat, while the northern end of town actually runs up the side of quite a steep incline. There you’re more likely to find great, long staircases running between houses rather than streets. While exploring this part of Dubrovnik is likely to take it out of you, these narrow staircases are exceptionally photographic and well worth the effort.

Buža Bar at Sunset

We have introduced you to the Buza Bar already above, but it’s now time to talk about that more. The awesome spot on the city walls has the perfect view over the Dalmatian Islands. The bar is on the edge of the cliffs and offers a dramatic view of the walls of Dubrovnik.

Walking down the terrazzas of the Buza bar, you can reach the shore; in summer, you will find sun beds and chairs to cool off and swim.

It’s not easy to find the Buza Bar; we got lost, even because our Gps was pointing wrong for no reason. There are no specific signs, and the entrance is by a narrow door through the city walls. Once stepped in, head down a few steps to the bar table and find the perfect spot.

Head to the Buza Bar on time for the sunset to enjoy the landscape, but bear in mind that it gets bustling even in the off-season. On average, drinks are one of the most affordable things to do in Dubrovnik on a budget.

Stroll the Old City at Night

When night comes, you have to stroll around the old town. Dubrovnik seems different from when cruise shippers and tourists came here just for a day off the ship. You will have most of the places for you, watching locals closing their shops and returning home.

However, Dubrovnik is a lively city with many clubs, bars, and pubs open until late, offering live music and shows. While staying in Dubrovnik for 3 days, we had the pleasure of visiting a few of them, and it was fun meeting other travellers.

Check out the Beer Factory with their nice backyard, Fontana Pub (one of the most lively) and also “the bar” offering live music every day.

Dubrovnik itinerary | Day 2

After a very long and tiring first day in Dubrovnik old town, you need to get outside the city walls. There is a lot to discover, and sometimes we feel it is impossible for a first-timer to maintain our pace and crop everything in just 3 days in Dubrovnik. However, we did, and you can do it too.

Day two in Dubrovnik is dedicated to researching the quietest places and other hidden gems in Croatia. If you are spending summer in Croatia, you want to hit the beaches, and Banje beach is the place to go. However, you might also check some guided tours to the nearby islands, which include a few stops on the way for a refreshing dive in the blue turquoise water.

Game of Thrones Walking Tour

If not done on day one, we suggest a place first thing in the morning of day two of your 3 days in Dubrovnik. Check out some of the best Game of Thrones tours of Dubrovnik. Once upon a time, Westeros was much closer to home. Why not visit what’s left of King’s Landing, where Robert Baratheon was killed; climb up to Sept of Baelor and catch a glimpse of what would have been Cersei Lannister’s balcony; or stop by Petriče Island for Sansa Stark and her maidenhood test?

Best beaches in Dubrovnik

Spending a day at one of Dubrovnik’s incredible beaches is a must for any visitor to Croatia’s historical gem. Several options include Uvalde Lapad, Sveti Jakov Beach, Betina Cave Beach, and Copacabana. This might be the best part of day two of your 3 day tour of Dubrovnik.

While all of these are great for an adventure, there’s one beach that checks all three boxes (beautiful, isolated, and pristine): Banje Beach. It might be our favourite Croatian beach overall. You will love its white sand, crystal-clear water, and small-town feel; it’s pretty unlike crowded Hvar or party island Vis!

Hop on The Cable Car to Mount Srd

The best view of Dubrovnik is definitely from Mount Srd. The area’s highest point offers an incredible landscape view of the Dalmatian Islands and picture-perfect Dubrovnik. There are three ways to reach Mount Srd from Dubrovnik Old town. The easiest way is taking the cable car (it was on maintenance when we visited); the second is taking a local bus until the midpoint and then about a 20-minute steep hike.

The third way to get from Dubrovnik’s old town to Mount Srd is by hiking the steep mountain through the trail. The hike is worth the effort, and we suggest you hike for the sunrise and take some lights on the way down with you.

Dubrovnik Itinerary | Day 3

Start your last day in Dubrovnik, discover the surroundings further away, and enjoy some of the best experiences the southern city in Croatia has to offer.

From another epic breakfast with a view in the centre of the old town of Dubrovnik to walking through Stradon and taking the bus to explore little towns not far away.

Dubrovnik has a lot to offer in 3 days, and you can either book your Lokrum Island tour in advance, explore Cavtat on a half-day trip, or go kayaking in the afternoon.

Day Trips from Dubrovnik

While Dubrovnik has plenty to offer within its city limits, you may also want to take a day trip or two. For example, there are many natural wonders to explore on nearby islands like Lokrum and Korcula. Or, for something completely different, check out Mljet National Park, where you can see 2 interconnected lakes that form an unreal turquoise hue when complete.

Kravice Waterfalls is another good spot to beat the heat if you visit during the summer! 

If you are in love with hidden gems, we also suggest checking out Cavtat. The little village at the edge of Croatia offers an endless view of the Adriatic Sea and a beautiful promenade. The smell of freshly baked bread and small bars of the province.

Go island hopping around Dubrovnik

You can go island hopping in Dubrovnik with ease. Booking a tour of the islands that are accessible and closest to Dubrovnik. Check out the tours for Mljet, Korcula, Hvar, and Brac Island, a short trip by boat or ferry from Dubrovnik.

Lokrum Island is the closest to Dubrovnik. The pristine island gets very busy in summer because it offers some of the best beaches and is just 20 minutes by boat from the harbour of the old town.

Sea Kayaking at Sunset in Dubrovnik

We don’t know if you have time on your trip, but this is something you have to note down in case you can make it. Rent a kayak in Dubrovnik and enjoy the view at sunset.

Book your kayak and go to the West Harbour of Dubrovnik if you want to take memories back home. This is the starting point of your next adventure. When you’re paddling beneath the city walls, they appear more intimidating. The tour will also take you around the shores of Lokrum Island and is an activity perfect for families, solo travellers and couples.

War Photo Limited

Another activity to place on your list if you have spare time is to step back into the history of this town. Back in the 90s, everything wasn’t perfect like today, and Dubrovnik passed by one of the most horrible pages of history.

You can revive the memories of that time with photo documentaries through the streets of Dubrovnik. While strolling around the narrow maze, we did this activity and got into the War Photo Limited exhibition in Dubrovnik’s Old Town. The museum contains a permanent exhibition of photographs and films documenting the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, the war and the destruction.

While staying for 3 days in Dubrovnik, you should consider making a day trip to the island surrounding the white city. Our suggested tours are from Viator and Get Your Guide. This is the best way to book in advance, not having surprises and skipping the queue.

When organising your day excursion, take a look at these possibilities:

Lokrum

The island of Lokrum, which is close to Dubrovnik, is the most convenient destination if you’re seeking a day excursion from the city. The island is off the coast of Dubrovnik and has beaches, forests, and a few noteworthy landmarks. Expect the tours and the beaches of Lokrum to be very busy in the summer in Croatia, but still worth the trip.

Even though Lokrum is worth a visit off-season, with many boats taking you from Dubrovnik West Harbour. 

 The Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary and its exquisite floral gardens and Fort Royal are notable locations on Lokrum. From Fort Royal, you can see the Dubrovnik Old Town across the sea opposite.

Elafiti Islands

Island hopping in the Elafiti Islands is the best option if you want to see multiple islands in one day. This archipelago, which consists of 14 islands, is northwest of Dubrovnik, and excursions there frequently make stops at the bigger islands like Koloep, Sipan, and Lopud.

Lopud

Lopud is about a 55 minutes ferry from Dubrovnik and offers one of the best landscapes of the Elafiti Islands. You can catch this guided tour and make the best of your day trip from Dubrovnik.

On the entire island, there is just one village with modestly sized stores. As you can understand, the island is tranquil, and you can find lovely beaches to enjoy the sunshine. Sunji Beach is the most popular one and offers perfect scenery over the Adriatic Sea.

Šipan

Sipan is another tiny island off the coast of Dubrovnik in the group Elafiti archipelago. The traditional island is picturesque and offers many photo spots. It is peaceful, so respect the surroundings and get the best locally sourced food, wine and a tranquil atmosphere.

Korcula

The wonderful Korcula will leave you speechless. But, of course, we are talking about one of the most beautiful islands in Croatia. Korcula is a popular destination in the Balkans in summer. Not only natural beauty but an authentic wonder where you can experience the real essence of Croatia and learn some of the best legends from the island. Check the ferry tickets!

Korcula is the birthplace of an adventurer, Marco Polo, and you can visit his house. The whole architecture of Korcula Town will remind you of Venice, as it was part of the territory of the old italian republic. As per that, the main sightseeing area of Korcula is St. Mark’s Cathedral, built in untouched Venetian style.

Sorting out your Dubrovnik itinerary and looking for some exciting day trips, Korcula should be on your list. However, you might also make the wise choice to start your Croatia itinerary in Dubrovnik and reach the beautiful island by ferry, spending a few days and leaving then for Hvar. 

Travelling to Croatia in summer, you might be most interested in the beaches. As Korcula is an island, it has some incredible beaches that you have to check out. Note down the sandy Pržina beach and Pupnatska Luka, a fine pebble beach accessible by a unique dirt road.

Visit Hvar Island

Hvar was one of the best spots we placed on our Croatia bucket list before our trip. The island is very close to Split, the second largest city in Croatia. Check out our itinerary of Split in 3 days.

You can visit Hvar on a day trip from Dubrovnik; however, it is easier to consider it from Split. As per Korcula, we advise you to consider visiting Hvar after Dubrovnik just if you plan a trip through Croatia for one to two weeks. Book your escape to Hvar Island by ferry!

The island is beautiful, and Hvar Town is fantastic. The architecture reminds you of Venice since you put your foot on the island. Visiting Hvar in summer, you should stick with the old town, and visit the nearby beach. The water is so clear, and the sandy beaches are some of the best on the Adriatic coast.

However, if you are visiting Croatia off-season, you should explore the island a bit more. Take reliable local transport and visit Stari Grad, one of the first towns ever in Croatia.

Spending the off-season in Croatia doesn’t lose the opportunity to experience the lavender fields. The island lavender is in full bloom in summer, but you can still enjoy it in remote areas of the island. Live and adventure in Croatia exploring the little village of Velo Grablje, or enjoy the party in June for the lavender festival of Hvar.

Explore Mljet Island

Mljet is often considered an off-the-beaten-path place to visit in Croatia. The wonderful island can be done on a day trip from Dubrovnik, where you connect with nature and relax a bit more.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy touristy old town of Dubrovnik, you can find the perfect hikes up to Montokuc, or have a swim in the saltwater lakes, and walk into a dense green forest.

Explore Cavtat

From one hidden gem in Croatia to another. Cavtat was a day trip from Dubrovnik, not in our plans. However, it was incredible. The little town is just 40 minutes away from the old town, and you can reach it by public transport.

We walked on the promenade, ate fantastic gelato, heard stories from locals and wandered a slow-paced life in this place. It has some picturesque narrow alleys that will inspire you. Explore Cavtat if you are staying in Dubrovnik for 3 days, as it is an easy day trip to squeeze into your travel plans.

Dubrovnik is wonderful itself, but you can explore even more, enjoying the surrounding area. So if you have the chance to spend more time in Dubrovnik and stretch your holiday period a bit, please do stay.

Spending a day or two more in Dubrovnik, you can book a tour to Montenegro or visit Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both countries are very close to Dubrovnik and easily done in a day tour.

We suggest three specific locations you should consider. Visit Mostar in Bosnia or go on a tour to Montenegro and explore fantastic locations such as Podgorica, the Bay of Kotor and Budva.

Cross the border and explore Monstar, Bosnia
