Things to know before visiting Hvar Island
Before getting deeper into the guide, it’s good to know a few things about Hvar. Let’s start by saying that it is easy to organise a day trip from Split to Hvar; however, this depends on the season.
Hvar Island is one of the most popular destinations for summer in Croatia. The island is often associated with a trip to Split, as it is the second-largest city in Croatia and directly connects to Hvar, Stari Grad, Brac, Korcula and even Dubrovnik.
A day trip to Hvar from Split is included in every guide about the Croatian Coastal city. Check out our Split 3 day itinerary.
You can visit Hvar even on an unplanned day, just booking your ticket at the port, at least the day before and hopping on the fast ferry. However, this is not possible during summer, as the ferries are sold out within a week before. Check out availability and tickets HERE.
Hvar Island is famous among youngsters as one of Croatia’s party places. However, Hvar is more than just fun! Fun! Fun. The island, tucked with the Dalmatian islands, has some of the best beaches in Croatia and is a must to visit while roaming around Croatia.
You can take a day trip to Hvar from Split, take advantage of multiple ferries per day, or go on a tour (We suggest checking tours with Get Your Guide and Viator. Even though you might stay just within Hvar’s old town, it is worth the trip. Enjoy the Venetian Architecture welcoming you on Hvar Island, roaming around the old town, and, why not, hiking up to the Spanish fortress for the best view of Hvar.
When to visit Hvar?
The peak tourist season in Croatia is from June through September. During this period, the weather is nicest, with pleasant temperatures and longest days. However, as it is the busiest time, the beaches might be crowded, and so the most significant sights of Hvar. During summer in Croatia, Hvar hosts some of the best festivals. The Hvar Summer Festival features a wide range of music, theatre, and dance performances.
If you like a more peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, we suggest you explore the island during the shoulder season (May, June, September, and October). The weather during these months might be more relaxed, but definitely, the atmosphere is perfect for chilling. We enjoyed visiting Hvar in Spring, as the flowers were blooming, and there were just a few people around. The shoulder season is also ideal for travellers on a budget, with a broader choice of accommodation and low prices.
The off-season is the best time to visit Hvar Island. However, if you want to avoid crowds and have a more relaxed experience, visit Hvar in November or April. The weather is cooler, and the days might be shorter, but many of the island’s cultural and historical attractions, like the Fortress, Cathedral, and museums, remain open and free.
We suggest you avoid the period between December and February as days are definitely shorter with less daylight available. Also, consider that there are fewer ferries on the route from Split to Hvar during winter. This consideration makes the Split to Hvar day trip challenging to organise.

10 Things to do in Hvar in one day | How to spend one day in Hvar
Hvar was on top of our Croatia bucket List, and we loved to make our trip to the island even though our ferry from Dubrovnik was cancelled because of rough seas. We were mainly attracted to Hvar because of the architecture, pristine landscape and quiet villages.
As usual, before travelling to the island, we made a list of the best things to do in Hvar, and there we went sharing it with you.
Also, continue reading after the best Hvar sightseeings, as we have crafted a unique one day Hvar Itinerary to help you plan it smarter and better.
How to spend one day in Hvar

Explore Hvar Old Town
In every guide about Hvar, it is unmissable to mention a stroll around the old town. Before starting our adventure through the island, we decided to spend an hour or so just chilling in the old town. Once debarked from the ferry from Split, you will see the fantastic architecture of Hvar harbour. Walking through the cobblestone roads, it becomes even more evident that Hvar is on another level, making it one of our favourite destinations in Croatia.
The charming old town is simply beautiful, with the castle protecting it in ancient times, the wide piazza and the Cathedral knocking time.
We slipped back in time, wandering around the streets and never got tired of these views. There are many spots you should consider checking in Hvar old town, and this is for sure St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Franciscan Monastery, just behind the harbour and the narrow side streets that come alive at night with buzzing bars and lively nightlife.
Walk along the promenade
Walking along the promenade, watching around and searching for the beauty in every detail was fantastic. The promenade comprises lined palm trees, statues, and stone seating with a perfect view over the sea and the Dalmatian islands. We have been strolling around the promenade twice during our day trip from Split to Hvar, one time once arriving and later at sunset. Both times of the day were fantastic. Walking through Hvar Promenade, you will notice many bars and ice cream shops. On a warm day, during the scorching Croatian summer, it might be refreshing to get an ice cream; we suggest checking out this gelato shop in Hvar.
Hike up to the Spanish Fortress
The Spanish Fortress is one of the highlights of every trip to Hvar Island. Walking up the narrow streets of Hvar Town, you will end up in a garden uphill towards Fortica. The garrison, also known as the Spanish Fortress, is the best viewpoint in Hvar.
We loved the view over Otok Jerolim and Otok Marinkovac Islands. We visited Hvar in the shoulder season, so the fortress was free to enter. However, we were lucky, as the monument is mainly closed in winter due to safety reasons and few tourists are around. Usually, the entrance to the Spanish Fortress in Hvar is €3 (£ 2.8 | $ 3.5). Nevertheless, you can spend a lot of time on the fortress, so it’s worth the effort of the easy hike. Inside the fortress, you will find a bar with a cute view of the sea.

Appreciate a typical local meal
While exploring Hvar, we couldn’t miss indulging in the local cuisine. As it is an island, you might guess correctly that the main dishes are seafood. However, Hvar has a wide production of vegetables and fruits across the island, which makes every dish a fantastic experience.
The cook also makes the meat very well and decorates the dishes colourfully. It was fantastic to speak with locals, get to know where every product came from, and discover that everything was locally produced.
Explore the surrounding villages | Stari Grad
Even though we explored Hvar Island by foot, it was easy to reach Stari Grad, on the other side of Hvar Town, by public transport. There are just a few buses crossing the island every day, but it is easy to plan the trip making the best of the return timing. The bus from Hvar Town will take you through breathtaking scenery, crossing the island from part to part. Alessia usually gets car sick, but not this time, so we are safe to say that it is an easy journey.
Following the legends, Stari Grad is the oldest city in Croatia. The wonderful little fisherman village is right on the sea, with surrounding hills and mountains (not so high) overlooking the Mediterranean. We enjoyed strolling around the town, with narrow cobblestone streets, very old but well-maintained buildings and reminiscence of the Roman Empire and Venetian rulers. Stari Grad is rarely on the traveller’s itineraries but is an unmissable place to visit while exploring Croatia. We often refer to StariGrad as a hidden gem in Croatia.

Discover the best beaches in Hvar Island
Of course, one of the main things to do on Hvar Island is to discover the best beaches. On a one day trip from Split to Hvar, visiting Croatia in summer, you can’t skip the beach time.
Some of the best beaches on the islands are away from Hvar’s old town, so you need a mode of transport to reach them. The suggested way is to rent a motorbike once you arrive in Hvar old town and drive through the winding hills in search of freedom.
Some of the most popular beaches in Hvar are Malo Zorace Beach. The crystal clear water is fantastic and worth the effort to reach the remote location. Milna beach is becoming popular among tourists, so expect big crowds in summer. However, it is good to know that some of the best beaches are made of rocks or pebbles, so beach shoes are needed.
The most hidden beach in Hvar is Jagodna. The fantastic strip of sand is still quiet and has yet to be discovered among tourists. The beach features a mix of sandy and pebbled short strips, surrounded by high cliffs that make the water even clearer.
Beaches in Hvar Town
We couldn’t miss giving you some insights if you wish to remain in Hvar Old Town. However, even if you don’t feel confident driving in Hvar, you can enjoy the beaches.
Right at the back of Hvar Harbour, near the Franciscan Monastery, there is Hvar Town beach. This is the closest beach to the old town and is reachable by a short but pleasant walk. The beach tends to be crowded in summer, but there is enough space to swim in the shallow water.
However, the best beach near Hvar Town is Bonj beach, which is also fantastic for sunset. Walking toward the Hotel Amfora, the beach is right in front of the accommodation. To reach the beach, you will pass by a pine forest, smelling the sea breeze and enjoying the beauty of the landscape.
Enjoy Hvar sunset
We have introduced you to Hvar sunset, but it is worth giving you some tips before visiting Hvar. While on a day trip from Split to Hvar, we knew that the favourite part of the day would be the sunset. Depending on the season you are visiting Croatia, the sunset time might change.
We suggest you head to Hvar town for sunset, so be on time to catch the last ferry. Then, hike up to the Spanish Fortress, and allow at least 30 minutes to reach the top. The view from the garrison is fantastic. Another great place to enjoy the sunset in Hvar is from the promenade. We went down to the Spanish Fortress on time to enjoy another point of view. Get a drink at a local bar, and walk to the pier. In our opinion, this is the best way to end your day trip to Hvar.
Visit the lavender fields in Hvar
Hvar is best known for its beaches, the nightlife and, of course, its beautiful lavender fields. Lavender fields near the village of Velo Grablje and the area around Sveta Nedjelja are two of the best places to see nearby Hvar town. Furthermore, the town of Hvar has several small lavender gardens and shops selling lavender-based products like soaps, oils, and sachets. You can get a lovely souvenir, unique from Hvar.
The best time to visit the lavender fields in Hvar town is typically during June and July (Summer in Croatia) when the lavender is in full bloom. The fields are a vibrant purple at this time of year, and the air is filled with the fragrant scent of blooming lavender. It is important to note, however, that the exact timing of the blooming season can vary depending on the weather conditions of that particular year.
If you are interested in visiting the Lavender fields in Hvar, check out this suggested tour.

Lost track of time admiring the Dalmatian Islands
We have already told you that once we disembarked in Hvar, we spent a lot of time in the old town’s main square. You should spend some time appreciating the fantastic landscape too.
Arriving in Hvar, many people are amused by the beautiful islands surrounding the destination, the architecture, and the unique colours that go from turquoise to blue.
We loved our little moments of appreciation looking at the islands surrounding Hvar, it was fantastic to see local life passing by with locals on little boats and fishermen coming back with the catch.
Go on a tour to Pakleni Islands
Only a few people know you can go on a fantastic day trip to Pakleni Island from Hvar island. It is a day trip into a day trip.
The tours are very cheap, and you should book in advance as it tends to be sold out easily since spring. On Pakleni Islands, you can enjoy a walk into the unspoiled nature or just lay on the beach (well, rocks). Check out this tour to Pakleni Island from Hvar.

Depending on what you are looking for, we found that it is easier and cheaper to stay in Split. However, if you want to enjoy just a few days of relaxation, staying in Hvar Island’s secluded spots might regenerate your body and mind. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and might be chaotic and stressful for travellers looking for peace of mind.

Croatia Travel Insurance
Nowadays, booking travel insurance is becoming part of the travelling plan. However, it’s just a precaution, and you should consider it even if you are an experienced traveller. Planning a day trip from Split to Hvar, which includes activities like hiking and some other sports, it’s essential to have travel insurance.
