If you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October are good options.
The island is also known for its nightlife and festivals. The peak season for nightlife is July and August. Consider these if you are looking for the perfect summer vacation in Europe. However, keep in mind that peak season can be crowded, and prices for accommodation and transportation can be higher.
Hvar weather for every season

Usually, the best time to visit Hvar for the best weather is in summer when the temperature is between 22°C/33°C. Summer in Hvar is ideal for hitting the beaches, enjoying a few drinks at the many bars in the main square, or roaming around the island searching for hidden spots. However, mid-June to the end of August is the busiest time for Hvar, attracting crowds and increasing prices for accommodations, fights and even daily meals.
If you want to avoid crowds but still enjoy the nice weather, we suggest looking into April, May, or September and October. We loved Hvar in Spring as it was quieter, but the weather was pleasant. Temperatures in Spring and the beginning of Autumn are generally between 20°C/25°C. This time of the year is the perfect one to take advantage of lower prices, enjoy beaches without crowds and generally have a pleasant stay in Hvar.
However, you have to consider that to reach Hvar, you should get a ferry, as there is no airport on the island. The sea in the shoulder season can be rough, making transport unpredictable. This is for sure also the case if you explore Hvar in winter. The connections between Hvar and Split might be cancelled due to weather conditions; plan ahead if you are going to take a flight and don’t want to lose the connection.
Where is Split Port?
It’s easy to spot Split Port, as it is the continuation of the Riva and is pretty visible from the city’s seaside. The ferries depart directly from the Port of Split and depart multiple times a day. The ferry port is well organised with led monitors that will give you clear instructions on where your boat is.
Also, consider that Split port is conveniently located next to Split bus station and Split Train station, making the connection easy, even if Split is not your arrival point. Split Port offers connection with other Croatia’s islands, other than just the usual Split to Hvar ferry.
How to get to the Port of Split?
There are multiple ways to reach Split Port. Arriving at the airport of the second major city in Croatia, you can take the connection shuttle that will take you from the airport to the city centre.
The bus departs from the arrival terminal every 30 minutes. The journey cost is reasonable, with tickets starting at €3 per person, and you can pay for it on board. The bus from the airport arrives at Split Terminal, which is right in front of the port.
The bus terminal is also the ending point for every bus from other parts of Croatia and also other countries. As you can see, it’s easy to locate Split Port.

Hvar island is located southwest of Split, one of the largest cities in Croatia. Hvar is about 68 nautical miles (about 126 km) southwest of Split. You can get between the two locations in many ways, all of them through the sea, as there are no airports on Hvar Island.
The fastest and most convenient way to travel from Split to Hvar is by ferry. The ferry ride usually takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes.
However, it’s also possible to reach Hvar by catamaran or speedboat, which takes less, but costs more. If you are willing to pay a premium price for the trip, the length is only around 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on sea conditions.
Another option will take you to the centre of the island. In fact, you can arrive or depart from Sucuraj, on the eastern side of Hvar island. This port is popular because it allows you to get to Hvar Island by car, having a harbour for bigger boats.
The journey from Split to Hvar Island to this side takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes. However, you should know that cars are not allowed to enter Hvar Old town, and you must park the vehicle at the parking lot.

Things to know before visiting Hvar Island
There are several ways to get from Split to Hvar Island by ferry:
- Jadrolinija | Jadrolinija is the leading ferry operator in Croatia and offers several daily ferry services from Split to Hvar Island during the summer months. - Jadrolinija to Jelsa | If you are visiting Hvar Island and staying in more remote areas, it’s good to look into transport from Split to Jelsa, operated by Jadrolinija. This transport is just for passengers, and no cars are allowed on board. Also note that you can either take pets or bikes; just foot passengers are allowed.
This is the fastest and cheapest way to reach Hvar Island from Split. The transport is usually just 1 hour and 40 minutes. The prices vary from €5,50 to €8 KN depending on the season, and there is only one boat a day. - Catamaran | Krilo and G&V Line are the two companies that operate high-speed catamaran services between Split and Hvar Island. The route has several summer trips and reduced service for the rest of the year. The trip between Split and Hvar Island on a catamaran takes just 1 hour and 30 minutes, and it’s the most comfortable journey.

- Private Transport | There are also several high-speed catamaran services that run between Split and Hvar Town during the summer months. These services are operated by companies such as Krilo and G&V Line, and the trip takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Speedboat: there are also several private speedboat companies that offer transport from Split to Hvar Town, with a travel time of around 1 hour and a half.
It’s important to note that the schedule of the ferries and catamarans changes depending on the season, so it’s best to check the schedule and book tickets in advance, especially during the peak summer season.

Stari Grad to Split
Jadrolinija Departure times | In Winter, there are three departures at 5.30, 11.30 and 17.30 throughout the day. In Summer, additional ferries depart at 5.30, 7.45, 11.30, 14.00, 17.30, 20.00 and 23.00. Car Ferry Service permitted.

Split to Jelsa
Jadrolinija Departure times | Only one departure from Split to Jelsa, ferry at 16.00 Monday to Thursday and at 16.30 on Friday and Saturday and the whole summer. Cars are not permitted on this route.

Jadrolinija Departure times | Only one departure from Split to Jelsa, ferry at 6.00 Monday to Friday and the whole. Winter Saturdays depart at 7.00 and on winter Sundays at 13.00. Cars are not permitted on this route.
Prices and tickets for Split to Hvar ferry
We suggest purchasing tickets in advance if you wish to run your holiday time smoothly. The Split to Hvar ferry route is usually extremely busy since spring, with limited tickets available. We recommend booking your tickets at least the day before and checking for the return ticket in advance. You can purchase the tickets online here.
The other option is to purchase the tickets at the Split Ferry office before the entrance to the harbour. There are also several ticket booths in the centre of Split on the Riva, but this might charge you an extra fee.

The local company Jadrolinija runs a daily ferry service, on route 635, from the Port of Split to Stari Grad. The ferry takes about 2 hours and has several services, up to seven boats per day, that run between the two locations.
This is the only service that allows you to take cars on board, and you will have a huge boat to relax in for about 2 hours.
How to get from Split Airport to Hvar Island
If you are looking straight to Hvar Island at Split airport, you will be pleased to know that there are several services you can go for.
The usual option is taking the Split Express, which leaves once a day at 1.00 PM to get to Stari Grad at 2.50 PM. One-way tickets start at €25. Travelling to Split Port might reduce of 50% the travelling costs by 50%, taking the shuttle from Split Airport to the Riva and crossing the street to the ferry port.
The opposite route from Hvar Island is served by two ferries per day, directed to Split airport. The two ferries depart from Stari Grad at 5.30 AM and 3.05 PM. Another option to get from Split Airport to Hvar Island and vice versa is to take private transportation.
The Water-taxi service runs from Split Airport to Hvar Town; however, it doesn’t come cheap, with tickets starting from €350. As it is private transport, you will have your own car taking you to the harbour and then a skipper with a private boat for the best of comfort. Check this option here.

The narrow and winding streets make it difficult to park in summer. Remember that you can’t get into Hvar Old Town with a car and must park outside.
- Boat | Having a boat while staying in Hvar is a fantastic way to explore the island alternatively. You can rent a boat anywhere on Hvar Island; however, having it for multiple days is quite expensive.
How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?
The ferry ride from Split to Hvar takes around an hour. It takes between 50 and 70 minutes, depending on the company and the sea conditions.
In the summer, the first ferry leaves Hvar at 7:40 a.m., and the last departs Hvar for Split at 9:30 p.m. (in winter, there are fewer rides).
