You might get lost, marvelling at the beauty of the stunning city walls, finding bars on the cliffs that will leave you speechless, and admiring the Dalmatian islands. As you see, there are more than one reasons to visit Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. Its ancient walls encircle a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, red-roofed buildings, and hidden courtyards. The city dates back to the 7th century when it was founded by the Romans. Subsequently, it developed into the Republic of Ragusa, a strong marine state lasting more than 400 years. The Republic of Ragusa was a centre for commerce and culture, with close relations to Venice and the Ottoman Empire.

Today, Dubrovnik is a bustling city drawing tourists from all over the world. Due to its mild climate, clear waters, and breathtaking natural beauty, it is a well-liked vacation spot for beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts. In our opinion, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. During these times, the crowds are smaller, the weather is milder, and the prices are more reasonable. You can enjoy the city’s beauty without feeling overwhelmed by the number of tourists.

In the spring, Dubrovnik is in full bloom, with flowers and greenery everywhere you look. The temperatures are warm enough to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities but not so hot that you feel uncomfortable. The crowds have thinned out in the fall, but the weather is still pleasant enough to enjoy the city’s outdoor attractions.

Of course, if you’re looking for a summer beach vacation, the summer months are the best time to visit Dubrovnik. Just be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices. No matter when you go, though, Dubrovnik is a city that will leave a lasting impression. How to get to Dubrovnik?

Flights | If you’re flying to Dubrovnik from Europe, the best airport to fly into are Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), offering direct flights to major European cities. Once you arrive at Dubrovnik Airport, it’s a quick 30-minute bus ride to the Old Town. Alternatively, you fly into Split, about a 3-hour drive from Dubrovnik, but often offers cheaper flights. Alternative Airports:

If you’re considering a trip to Dubrovnik, you may wonder about alternative airports to fly into. Here are three options, including their distance from Dubrovnik, cheapest options, and transportation options.

Tivat Airport (Montenegro) | Approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Dubrovnik. The airport is served by the leading low-fare carriers in Europe. You can find tickets as low as €30 from everywhere on the continent. Dubrovnik is about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car. There is a direct bus service that connects the city with the airport.

Split Airport (Croatia) | Split is the most convenient alternative to Dubrovnik airport. The second major city in Croatia is about 230 Kilometres (143 miles) from Dubrovnik and offers a wide range of cheaper flight options. It will take about 3 hours and a half to get to Dubrovnik from Split, and many daily bus services run there.

Sarajevo International Airport (Bosnia and Herzegovina) | The major city in B&H is about 250 kilometres away from Dubrovnik, 155 miles. There are better options than this if you want to explore Dubrovnik, but they are still affordable. About 4 hour drive divides the two cities, but you can take a public bus that runs daily. You must pass the border control if you want to get this option.

How to get around Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik is a compact city that is easy to navigate, whether you’re walking or using public transport. The old town is pedestrian-only, and you will love to roam around the narrow alleys and cobblestone streets that seem still in time. Get lost in the white maze and discover the charming cafes and restaurants to stop at. Overall walking is a great way to explore Dubrovnik’s history and culture.

If you want to venture outside the Old Town, you can take a bus or a taxi. The bus system in Dubrovnik is reliable and efficient, with several lines that connect different parts of the city. We found this the best way to avoid bargains with taxis, as even though Uber is available, it was hard to find one.

Another option for getting around Dubrovnik is by bike. However, you must be prepared for steep cliffs and high temperatures if visiting Dubrovnik in Spring or Summer. Nevertheless, getting outside the city was easy; we explored Cavtat only by bus, which was easy and quick.

Is Dubrovnik worth visiting?

Yes. We love recommending Dubrovnik to our family, friends, and readers. The city is completely safe and gorgeous. You will have a pleasant holiday in Croatia, depending on your travelling style. Definitely, the prominent attractive location in Croatia is worth the trip, and you should consider at least 3 days in Dubrovnik to fully understand the city. A small and walkable city

As said many times, the pleasant walk-through is among the many reasons Dubrovnik is worth visiting. Old town. Dubrovnik was one of the best cities we explored in Croatia, free of traffic and pedestrian friendly. Dubrovnik is a compact and walkable city that can be easily explored on foot. Wake up early in the morning to enjoy the sunrise and walk through the cobblestone streets when no other tourists are around.

We woke up around 6.30 to shoot some typical instragrammable photos of Dubrovnik and had one of the best experiences ever. The city was deserted, as cruise ships and tours were not yet here. Nevertheless, Dubrovnik was magical and, in some ways, romantic.

Ideal for a romantic weekend in Croatia

Dubrovnik’s stunning architecture, beautiful beaches, and delicious cuisine make it the perfect destination for a romantic weekend in Croatia. The city’s narrow streets and historic buildings create a charming, intimate atmosphere perfect for couples.

Spending two days in Dubrovnik, or even more, if you can afford it, might be a fantastic present for your other half. You can organise a fantastic long weekend in Dubrovnik, and then take off to other destinations, one that we suggest is Montenegro, enjoying the picturesque Kotor.

Incredible architecture

Dubrovnik is renowned for its remarkable architecture, which is a unique blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dubrovnik’s beautiful Old Town served as the filming location for King’s Landing, and it’s famous for the photo on the Jesuit Stairs, like the one above. Our taste buds were on a feast! Dubrovnik’s cuisine is an explosion of flavours that reflect its history and culture, with influences from Italy, Greece, and the Ottoman Empire. Every dish celebrates the region’s fresh produce, aromatic herbs, and spices, from the succulent grilled octopus to the mouth-watering cevapi.

Whether you’re a fan of seafood, meat or vegetarian options, Dubrovnik’s culinary scene offers many options to satisfy your cravings. In addition, Croatia has got some great wines that you will enjoy accompanying local dishes and freshly caught oysters or fish.

Hikes and beaches

Among the many reasons you should visit Dubrovnik now is that it has it all. From scenic hikes to unspoiled beaches. Overall we found Dubrovnik a nature lover’s paradise. You can go for a whole day out, passing from extensive hiking trails to secluded coves or lively beaches.

The trails are perfect for every hiker, as there are difficult paths and easy walks. 

Hiking in Dubrovnik‘s natural parks and reserves is an excellent way to explore the region’s untouched wilderness and witness the stunning views of the city and surrounding islands. The first path travellers will get into is Mount SRD. We suggest getting there for sunrise or sunset, as the view of the Dalmatian Islands is astonishing. You can either go hiking for about one hour on an easy path or get up with the cable car and go down walking.

Best hikes in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is well known for its picturesque hiking paths, in addition to its gorgeous beaches and magnificent architecture. Here are the top three treks in Dubrovnik, listed in order of length and duration:

• Mount Srd | The popular hike is approximately 2.5 km long and takes around 1 hour to complete. The trail offers breathtaking views of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding islands. You can either hike up or take a cable car to the summit and enjoy a panoramic view from the top.
• Lokrum Island | This beautiful island just off the coast of Dubrovnik offers several hiking trails of varying lengths. The longest trail takes around 2 hours to complete and offers stunning views of the island’s flora and fauna, including peacocks and rabbits.
• Konavle Valley | This scenic hiking trail is approximately 8 km long and takes 3-4 hours to finish. The track winds through the picturesque Konavle Valley and shows sensational sceneries of the region’s vineyards, olive groves, and traditional villages.

Best beaches in Dubrovnik

You will find some of the most lovely beaches in Croatia in Dubrovnik. We have listed just a few, but you must uncover a few more by yourself by getting around Dubrovnik.

• Banje Beach | The busiest and most stunning beach in Dubrovnik is Banje Beach, which is within a short distance from the Old Town. Pebbly beach with clean, blue sea and breathtaking views of the city walls.
• Šunj Beach | This is a large, sandy beach on Lopud Island. This shoreline is excellent for families with children. The shallow, warm water is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. You can take a local boat from Dubrovnik harbour every time.
• Sveti Jakov Beach | Among the hidden gems in Dubrovnik, there is Sveti Jakov beach. The rocky cliffs preserve a pristine beach away from the crowded old town. However, travellers looking for photo spots in Dubrovnik know this beach as it offers a stunning view of the city walls.

We have already introduced to you our recommendation for a scenic sunset spot in Dubrovnik. You must pass through the old town walls to uncover the Buza Bar. The outlandish spot sits on the cliffs overlooking the Dalmatian islands. It is one of the most romantic things to do in Dubrovnik and is very affordable. There is a bar (not very furnished, with a little offering, but still good at our visit), so you can sit and enjoy the view. It is often windy, so be prepared. We have seen people also going with the swimsuit, as you can reach the sea quickly, for a dive into the blue water.

Go on an Island hopping tour

We highly recommend going on an island hopping tour in Dubrovnik. With its stunning coastline, crystal-clear waters, and secluded coves, the islands around Dubrovnik are a paradise waiting to be discovered.

You can organise a few day trips from Dubrovnik to enjoy the islands. This is an all-year activity, even though to enjoy the beaches, the best time is late spring and summer. Just in front of Dubrovnik is Lokrum Island, which was also part of “Game of Thrones” filming locations.

Taking a day trip to the Elaphiti Islands is another way to get away from the busy streets of Dubrovnik. Located just off the coast of the white city, it is a must-visit destination that not many travellers consider. The islands are amongst the archipelago and offer several historical landmarks, beautiful beaches and snorkelling spots, or a calm and relaxing day exploring charming villages and sampling the local cuisine. The Elaphiti Islands also have thick forests ideal for leisure walks and small hikes to enjoy panoramic views.

Pass the border to Montenegro for a day trip

Dubrovnik is located close to the border with Montenegro, making it easy to take a day trip to Kotor Bay and the surrounding area. This is one of the main reasons to visit Dubrovnik, as it can give you a week full of activities. Montenegro is still a hidden gem in some ways, among the smallest countries in Europe, featuring some of the best little villages, natural beaches and perfect outdoor activities.

We suggest staying in Dubrovnik for at least 2 days. If you want to explore the old town, soak into the beaches and hike to Mount SRD, two days might be tight, and you need at least an extra day. On the other hand, if you want to explore the surrounding area, having Dubrovnik as your base, 4-5 days are perfect for your next vacation to Croatia.

Is Dubrovnik cheaper than Split?

Yes. We found Split more affordable compared to Dubrovnik. As the first has all the amenities a big city has to offer, instead Dubrovnik is more devoted to mass tourism, with quick bite explorers that get off from city cruises or bus tours every day. Accommodation and general expenses are cheaper in Split than in Dubrovnik.

Is Split or Dubrovnik better?

We loved both for different reasons. Both Split and Dubrovnik offer unique attractions and experiences. Split has a more lively atmosphere and is ideal for nightlife addicts, outdoor activities or general city vibes. While Dubrovnik is perfect for history and culture lovers who prefer a quieter setting or couples looking for a romantic getaway in Europe.

Is Dubrovnik too touristy?

Yes. At first, we had an awful impression of Dubrovnik as the city gets overcrowded during peak season. However, you must see the city when no one is around, at sunrise and at dark. We loved the cobblestone streets when the cruiser and day trippers were gone. Also, consider visiting Dubrovnik in the low season to get less crowded places and cheaper prices.

Is 3 days enough in Dubrovnik?

Yes. 3 days is enough to see everything of Dubrovnik, including the Old Town and the city walls, and take a day trip to the nearby islands.

Is Croatia worth the hype?

Absolutely! We explored the whole country backpacking, which was fantastic. Croatia offers stunning natural landscapes, pristine reserves and nice walkable cities and villages. The local cuisine is fantastic, and away from tourist places, we found friendly locals.

Which is better, Kotor or Dubrovnik?

Both Kotor and Dubrovnik are stunning coastal cities with beautiful architecture and history. However, we must admit that quiet travellers will prefer Kotor, as the village is smaller and less crowded, with a more relaxed vibe. On the other hand, Dubrovnik has a larger Old Town and so more attractions. Therefore, we suggest visiting both or going for a day trip to one or another.

Is Dubrovnik Safe?

Yes. We always felt safe in Dubrovnik, the city is calm, and we explored everywhere at every time of the day. But, of course, the compact old town gets overcrowded during the day, and you must keep an eye on your belongings as pickpockets are always on the lookout.
