We explored Brno while backpacking through Europe. It was a fantastic escape to the heart of the old continent. Away from the glamour of the well-known Prague, Brno is perfect for youngsters seeking nightlife hot spots and walkable cities to enjoy freedom while curiously exploring. This guide is perfect if you are planning to visit the city and want to fill the gaps with a few day trips from Brno.
When visiting a place, we tend to discover its surroundings. You can organise so many incredible days out from Brno, and you might stay longer than planned in the second city of the Czech Republic. From Brno is easy to roam around the region of South Moravia. From the old town of Boskovice to the breathtaking Punkva Caves, you will find all the best Brno day trips in this guide. Pack your bags, camera and a pair of hiking shoes, as discovering these places around Brno will blow your mind.
Best time to visit Brno
We visited Brno in September, and the end of the summer would be a suitable month to visit Brno. Unfortunately, it was pretty cold, and we had to buy additional jumpers to stay warm. However, despite being cold, the days were still lovely, sunny and with fewer clouds.
If you’re not a winter lover, we suggest visiting Brno and its surroundings around summertime. Temperature goes from 23 to 26 degrees, ideal for exploring around Brno and visiting the incredible South Moravia region. Checking the best option for when visiting Brno, you can also consider Spring. The temperatures in the shoulder season are ideal for outdoor activities and staying in the countryside; you might enjoy the little mist in the morning that makes the atmosphere unique in this part of Europe.
How to get around Brno
How to reach Brno
Airport
If you’re travelling from the UK or Europe in general, you can find cheap flights to Brno. From Luton or Stanstead airport, you’ll be able to reach Brno in less than 3 hours.
From Brno airport to the city centre
Once you arrive at the airport, you can catch the bus E76 and the journey to reach the city centre will take around 20 minutes. If you have a late evening flight, don’t worry; there is also a night bus, the N89.
The bus fare is around 25 CZK per adult, and you can pay the driver directly, purchase the tickets in the vending machine at the arrival terminal, or you can pay with your contactless card.
From Vienna airport to Brno
An alternative route to reach Brno is from Vienna airport. We flew from Naples to Vienna, and the overall journey took around 2 hours.
From Vienna airport, you have 2 options to reach Brno:
FLIXBUS | There are multiple flixbus departing from Vienna airport and reaching Brno city centre. Our original plan was to catch the last bus to Brno, but our flight got delayed. Glad we had our insurance, so we didn’t lose any money and got on the first train the morning after. You can pre-book your flixbus here and reach Brno in less than 2 hours. We did book the tickets in advance and managed to pay £10 for both of us.
TRAIN | As our flight was delayed, we had to find an alternative solution. It was 1 AM, and only a few trains departed from Vienna airport to Brno. We slept at the airport and waited for the first train. We took the train from Vienna airport to the central train station and from there the direct train to Brno. The overall journey was 3 hours as we had to wait for the coincidence, but it was fine as we had time to grab a quick bite before catching the train. We used Regiojet, which was cheaper than the direct train from Vienna Airport to Brno. Pretty cool if you’re travelling on a budget.
Train from Prague
In less than 3 hours, you can reach Brno from Prague. We pre-booked our tickets here and saved a lot. We only paid 6 euros for our tickets and the journey was really comfortable.
Check before travelling to the station, as there are different stops, and you might need clarification. We took the train from Brno to Prague’s central train station Wilsonova. (Praha hn.l)

Boskovice Jewish Quarter
During our last trip to Brno, we quickly stopped in Boskovice for lunch. We thought we were in the middle of nowhere with few things to see and do. Actually, we were surprised to see and witness the incredible history behind Boskovice Jewish Quarter.
The lovely little village in South Moravia is fabulous, with colourful buildings, stunning architecture, and an impressive synagogue. Boskovice Jewish Quarter was once a ghetto divided from the central city by gates that were built in the 1700s.
Today, if you’re taking a day trip from Brno to Boskovice, you will be able to see the remains of the gates.
Additionally, while walking around the Jewish quarter, you can spot some of the histories of WW2 and the horrible things that involved this little village. Keep your head down while walking as locals pay their respect to the people deported in the concentration camps.
Located less than 2 hours from Brno, Boskovice is perfect for a day trip from Brno. Below you will find helpful information on how to get there.
How to reach Boskovice
The town is located around 45 minutes drive from Brno. However, the drive is pretty easy, and you can rent a car here, allowing you to move freely around South Moravia. Instead, if you wish to use public transport, you can take an hour’s train and change to Cerna Hora.

On the hilltop of Boskovice, you can take the opportunity to check out its lovely castle. So grab your guide and discover the impressive South Moravia’s history. The castle remains dates back to the 13th century and offers some incredible views of the area. We spent an hour or so around the castle as there were so many cute spots, and we couldn’t leave without taking our pictures.
If you’re still around for lunchtime, head to Hostinec u Rudyho and taste some of the best local dishes. The menu is set per day, making it special as you don’t know what you’ll be eating that day.
Punkva Caves and Macocha Abyss
Not so far from Boskovice, you can get into the womb of the karst that shapes the landscape. This is one of the most incredible experiences for curious travellers in Europe.
The caves are unforgettable. While walking down, you will have the guide explaining the history and highlighting some essential parts of the rocks. Then, almost at the end of the tour, you will hop on a board that will follow the Punkva river and witness some of the most beautiful features of the Moravian Karst.
Taking a day trip from Brno to the Moravian Karst was one of the best ideas ever. Thanks to its landscape, caves and canyons, you will fall in love with this place from the moment you walk down. You can buy the tickets directly there or plan a day tour and visit the Mococha Abyss, a 138m deep rocky canyon together with the Punkva Caves.
How to reach Punkva Caves
If you rent a car from Brno, the drive is around 45 minutes. While on the road, you can stop along the way and check out the surrounding areas. Otherwise, you can take a train to Blansko and from there change to a bus or take a taxi. If you wish to have everything organised for you, book this tour.
Rájec Chateau
During our trip to Brno, we had to change the itinerary due to the weather conditions. If this means pretty chateaux and a beer by the cute garden, we don’t mind. To make the best of our time while we travel, we split. The afternoon that we visited Rajec Chateau, Alessia decided to visit the inside and Toti was grabbed by Scott and Paul for a beer by the chateau’s garden.
From the moment you step out of your car, you will understand why this chateau is worth visiting, even though it is just 30 minutes drive from Brno. The exterior is decorated with extensive gardens, fountains and pretty flower composition. If you’re a photography lover, this place will blow your mind.
If you wish to visit the interior, a guide will show you around, although she doesn’t speak English. However, they have printed copies that explain room by room what’s inside.
How to reach Rajec Chateau
By car, you can reach the chateau in 35 minutes. Renting a caris the best way to get around! Although, if you wish, you can take a train to Cerna Hora and then change. The journey will be around 50 minutes.
Valtice Castle
If you’re a fairytale lover, this place will blog your mind. Hop on a bus to Breclav to reach Valtice Castle. You will need to change for an additional bus to Valtice, but in less than 1 hour and a half, you will reach this gorgeous castle. Located near the border with Austria, the stunning landscape Lednice-Valtice offers two incredible palaces that today are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Valtice Castle, over the centuries, was remodelled several times, and today, you can admire the gorgeous exterior Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Baroque styles.

How to reach Valtice Castle
You can rent a car in Brno and reach Valtice Castle in less than 1 hour. The journey is straightforward, and you shouldn’t have any issues. Alternatively, you can catch the train from Brno station Hlavní nádraží (R13) and change at Podivín. From Podivín, you need to take a bus (555), another 30 minutes journey to reach Valtice.
Brewery at Černá hora
We all know that the Czech Republic is famous for its beers, and travelling around South Moravia, you will have the opportunity to visit a local brewery and try delicious and different types of beers. During our trip around South Moravia, we visited Pivovar Černá Hora, a historical brewery that dates back to 1530. It’s a fantastic experience that you must do. Moravský Krumlov Castle
We couldn’t ask for a better ending for our South Moravia trip. This was one of our favourite days ever. We ended up visiting Moravsky Krumlov Chateau, which accommodates unique and incredible works of art. In fact, we could witness the stunning Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic exhibition.
Alessia was just in love with this place. A 16th-century Renaissance chateau was built during one of the glorious periods of the modern Czech Republic.
As soon as we entered, we were welcomed with a massive painting on canvas showcasing incredible details and traditions of the Slavs. Notable, isn’t it? For sure, it’s worth taking a day trip from Brno to visit this castle. Once you finish your visit, you can climb up to the castle tower and enjoy a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. There are quite a few stairs, but the view it’s worth the hype.
How to reach Moravsky Krumlov Castle
The drive only takes 45 minutes from Brno city centre, and there are so many places where you can rent a car. Instead, if you’re looking for a sustainable way to travel, take the train to Moravsky Krumlov and change with the 440 bus. Additionally, you can grab a taxi to reach your final destination.
Wine tour in South Moravia at Lednice and Valtice Estate
Visits the National Wine Salon in Valtice, showcasing tastings of the Czech Republic’s best wines and a viticulture exhibition. Within the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Lednice and Valtice, you can have the best experience seeking the wine routes in South Moravia. Walk through the vineyard, and explore the history since its establishment and the brand’s development. Both estates are just 45 minute drive outside Brno, easy to reach, passing by a wonderful landscape.
Pàlava | Close to the Austrian border
If you are up for quiet days in the Czech Republic, with streaking scenery and perfect sunset, Pàlava is the ideal place for you. Often referred to as Pavlov Hills or Pavloské vrchy, this place is close to the border with Austria. The protected landscape is a UNESCO biosphere reserve for its unique climate feature and overall scenery.
Prepare yourself to drive through limestone formation until the border with Austria. Despite that, you will pass by vineyards and farms in one of the driest and hottest areas in the Czech Republic. The climate conditions make this part of the country one of the most fertile. Also, Palava is well known for its rich art and culture and perfect hike trails for passionate hikers.

Prague
Before leaving the Czech Republic, you must visit Prague, the stunning capital. It was Alessia’s second time, and she loved it even more. From Brno, you can catch the direct train to Prague, and in 2 hours and a half, you will reach Prague train station. You can purchase your ticket online here and save time for your journey to Prague.
The train is comfortable and easy to reach from any accommodation in Prague. We stayed at Plus Prague, and we reached the accommodation in less than 30 minutes by tram.

Vienna
For Alessia, Vienna was a dream come true. She had dreamt of this moment all her life, and when she finally made it to Vienna, she was the happiest person ever. There are different ways that you can reach Vienna from Brno. If you need to reach Vienna airport, you can take a direct bus from Brno to Vienna airport.
Additionally, you can take a direct train from Brno centre that will take you directly to Vienna train station. Vienna is unique and absolutely worth considering as a day trip from Brno.

Back in 2018, we did a fantastic road trip touching Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava. Usually not considered a day trip from Brno, Bratislava has its own charm.
Perhaps, it was the winter atmosphere that made us fall in love with Bratislava. Although, Bratislava has got many things to do and see. From its castle to the iconic sights of UFO Tower, it’s worth adding Bratislava to your Europe bucket list.
