Puglia Airports

There are four main airports in Puglia for civil use, hosting mostly European carriers.

  1. Bari-Karol Wojtyla Airport
  2. Brindisi-Salento Airport
  3. Taranto-Grottaglie Airport
  4. Foggia-Gino Lisa Airport

What is the best way to get to Puglia?

The best way to get to Puglia is by flight, landing in Bari or Brindisi. However, the lack of overseas flights affects the decision on how to get to Puglia, as many will land in Naples and make their way to Bari by train.

If you’re coming from within Italy, then the train might be a good option as it’s a comfortable and affordable way to travel. You can also drive to Puglia, but remember that the roads can be narrow and winding in some areas.

If you’re coming from Europe, there are daily direct flights from Germany, the UK and France. In addition, you can fly into either Bari or Brindisi airport.

FAQ | Answering all your Puglia Airports questions

Two main airports for Puglia Holidays

Even though there are four airports in Puglia, the two main ones to reach well-known locations are Bari Airport and Brindisi. Each of these has differences and gives you access to different areas of Puglia. In fact, Bari is seen as the gateway to Valle d’Itria and one of the closest airports to Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Alberobello and Matera.

Brindisi Airport is in the centre-east of the region and serves as a gateway to the Salento area. The southern part of Puglia is mainly devoted to the best beaches in Italy, with well-known destinations for leisure, such as Gallipoli, Lecce, Otranto and more.

Once you’ve arrived at either Bari or Brindisi airport, you’ll need to figure out how to reach your final destination in Puglia. Here are some of the best transportation options:

  • Car Rental in Puglia: We suggest planning ahead for your rental car, as it tends to be sold out within weeks. If you’re planning to explore Puglia on your own, renting a car is the most convenient option, as some rural areas are not served by public transport at all or just have limited service. Several car rental companies operate at both Bari and Brindisi airports, including Hertz, Avis, and Europcar. Check out the best bargains and secure your car now.
  • Bus: If you’re on a budget, taking the bus is a good option. We did that too, and public transport is reliable within some of the popular destinations. Both Bari and Brindisi airports have a bus station located outside the terminal building. It is cheap and convenient taking the bus, even though it might take longer sometimes. You can purchase the ticket on board or at the counter outside the arrival terminal.
  • Train: Taking the train is another option, especially if you’re travelling to Puglia from other parts of Italy. Both Bari and Brindisi airports have train stations located within the airport complex, and you can take a train to other destinations in Puglia, such as Lecce or Taranto. However, be sure to check the train schedules in advance here, as they may not run as frequently as buses.
  • Taxi: Taking a taxi is the most convenient option if you want to avoid dealing with the hassle of public transportation. It can be cheaper too, booking in advance your private transport and is available at both Bari and Brindisi airport. Check out options for private taxis in Bari and Brindisi Airports.

Where to stay in Puglia as base

We travelled all around Puglia in search of the best place to stay and discover the surroundings. We found a few interesting places and wrote dedicated guides for each of them. If you are exploring the central part of the region, we suggest staying in Bari or Martina Franca. Both locations are strategic as Bari is closest to the beachside and ideal for visiting Polignano a Mare and the best beaches in Monopoli.

On the other hand, Martina Franca is a little unknown and so well treated as a hidden gem in Puglia. The fantastic town on the hilltop of Valle d’Itria is centred on main sights such as Alberobello, Locorotondo and Ostuni.

Another location that we suggest considering is Brindisi. The fantastic seaside town, home of an international airport, is the gateway to Salento, the southern part of the region.

Even though it is away from Gallipoli, it is perfect for discovering little villages on the coast. Ending here, we suggest also considering Lecce and Otranto. The two cities are mid-way between Brindisi airport and the end of the heel.

Both locations boast an incredible shoreline, but Lecce is more city than Otranto and, in our opinion, better for cheap accommodations and amenities.

Is Bari a good base for Puglia?

Bari is an excellent base for exploring Puglia, as it is the largest city in the region and has excellent transportation connections. From Bari, you can easily reach other destinations in Puglia, such as Alberobello, Ostuni, and Lecce, by train or bus.
