Is Bali worth visiting?

Yes, yes and absolutely yes. Bali is definitely worth visiting. Our perspective changed once we were able to live on the island for 2 months. We loved the vibes, the atmosphere and the glamorous life in Bali.

However, you must know that over the years, the island has become really popular among tourists and influencers; therefore, be ready to bump into heavy traffic and crowds. Even though Bali has so many things to offer, discover the island and go beyond the famous areas like Canggu and Seminyak. Head towards Ubud, Sidemen and Munduk and experience the real essence of the Island of Gods.

Best time to visit Bali

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to September. The weather is sunny and warm during this time, making it ideal for outdoor activities and beach lounging. The average temperature during the dry season is around 27 degrees, with little to no rainfall. This makes it the perfect time to explore Bali’s many beaches, temples, and other attractions.

If you really want to experience Bali in its full glory, make sure you visit in March, during Nyepi, their New Year. We happened to be on the island for Nyepi and Silence Day, and it was one of the most incredible experiences ever.

Bali Travel Insurance

Bali Visa

If you hold a US, UK, Australian or EU passport, you can travel by just applying online. Most passports can enter Indonesia for up to 30 days on a Visa on Arrival.

However, from February 2023, you can do the procedure online and pay in the same instance, reducing queuing time at the airport. A visa can convert your visa on arrival for an extra 30 days for longer stays. If you have done the procedure online, you don’t have to go to the immigration office, saving money and time. How to get around Bali

SCOOTER | We always choose to rent scooters. We have been driving with confidence all over Southeast Asia. Always carry your driving licence and international permit. Hire a scooter in Bali starts from 75,000 IDR per day ($5 | £4 | €4.5) for a 125cc. The best is to get at least 150cc if you are exploring Bali as a couple.

HIRE A DRIVER | Another option to get around Bali is to hire a local driver. This is the most common option for many tourists visiting the island with a bit of a budget. If you want somebody who takes you around without the hassles of driving through narrow alleys alone, it is the most affordable way to discover Bali. Hiring a driver in Bali starts from 500,000 IDR per day ($34 | £27 | €31).

Tegalalang Rice Terrace

Tegalalang Rice Terrace is a must-visit for Instagrammers in Bali. The stunning terraced landscapes, lush greenery, and palm trees stretching into the horizon provide endless photo opportunities.

The rice terraces are located in the Tegallalang village, about 30 minutes from Ubud. The best time to visit is during the wet season when the rice fields are lush and green. However, the terraces are beautiful all year-round.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

You can walk along the narrow paths and capture nice pictures with an incredible background. Pura Lempuyang Temple

Also known as the Bali Gates of Heaven, the iconic gates are set against the backdrop of Mount Agung, which makes it the perfect Bali Instagram spot. As you step through the gates, you will be greeted by a picturesque view that is begging to be captured and shared with the world.

The temple is located in the Karangasem Regency on the eastern tip of Bali. It is a popular tourist destination, and visitors must climb 1,700 steps to reach the top of the temple. The views from the top are simply stunning, and it is no wonder that the temple is so popular with photographers.

Remember that Pura Lempuyang Temple is a spiritual place; therefore, be mindful and dress appropriately! Respect the local culture!

The Handara Gate is located in the Handara Golf & Resort in Ubud, Bali and is set against a backdrop of lush green hills and rice paddies. It is a popular spot for photos, as it provides a stunning backdrop.

In fact, being one of the most instagrammable places in Bali, the majority of the time, you will find long queues, everyone waiting for their moment to get a picture. It doesn’t matter if you go early in the morning, we passed by at 9 AM and there were so many people already waiting. Although, it’s absolutely worth it!

Bali Twin Lakes Viewpoint

The Bali Twin Lakes Viewpoint is a must-visit for anyone looking for an Instagrammable spot with a touch of serenity. Located near Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, this viewpoint offers a mesmerising view of the twin lakes nestled among lush hills. For us, it was an interesting adventure to reach the Twin Lakes. It was a grey and cloudy day, like many during the shoulder season in Bali. As soon as we reached the lakes, it started raining. How lucky, right? But, to be honest, it was charming despite the rain and the clouds.

Tamblingan Lake

Let’s be honest; when it comes to highlighting all Bali Instagram spots, we only think about the famous Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida and the rice terraces. Bali has a lot more to offer; you just need to discover it. In fact, Tamblingan Lake is a hidden gem in Bali, thanks to its peaceful environment and unspoiled beauty. 

The lake is home to three small temples, Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, Pura Dalem Tamblingan, and Pura Puncak Mangu.

These temples are important to the local people and are a popular tourist destination. Visitors can rent a traditional canoe and explore the calm waters of the lake. The lake is also a great place to go for a swim, a hike, or a picnic. The stillness of Tamblingan Lake is a perfect backdrop for Instagram photos.

Sidemen Valley

For our anniversary, we decided to have the day off and explore the beauty of Sidemen Valley. To be honest, we couldn’t be happier to be on that scooter and admire the beautiful views that the Island of Gods has to offer. Sidemen Valley offers a charming rural landscape perfect for all photography lovers. 

As you wander through the valley, you’ll encounter scenes of everyday life, farmers tending to their crops, and smiling locals. Sidemen Valley is a true hidden gem to add to your Bali itinerary.

Lahangan Sweet

Lahangan Sweet is one of the best sunrise and sunset spots in Bali. The view of Mt. Agung is breathtaking, regardless of the time of day you visit. However, to have the best experience, we recommend visiting early in the morning at 6 AM or in the late afternoon at 5/5.30 PM. This is because the light is at its best during these times, and you will be able to see the sunrise or sunset over the mountain. The views are simply stunning, and you will not be disappointed.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a unique place worth visiting in Bali. The King of Karangasem built the palace in the early 10th century, and today is considered one of the most instagrammable places in Bali. In fact, if you’re going during the day, you will find many tourists and Instagrammers trying to get their shots. The palace is surrounded by pools which makes the place unique in its design.

Potato Head 

Bali is known for its many beach clubs; if you’re staying around Canggu or Seminyak, you might have heard about Potato Head. To be honest, it’s our favourite sunset beach club spot, and almost every day, we were there enjoying a dip in the pool and a fresh coconut. 

The beach club is impressive, featuring 3 pools, the hotel and many bars. You don’t need to pay for the entrance like many other beach clubs in Bali, but you must buy a drink or dinner. To be honest, it’s worth all the money, so don’t miss a sunset from Potato Head and make sure to bring your bikini!

Pura Tirta Empul

This sacred water temple is a must-see in Bali. In fact, they said that the temple’s holy spring water has healing powers; therefore, many locals and tourists visit this palace. 

The scenery is just great to snap a few pictures but remembers to behave and respect the temple while many locals attend the cleansing ritual. As per the Tirta Gangga Water Palace and Pura Lempuyang Temple, please follow common sense, it is a sacred place, and you must respect locals and their traditions and cultural heritage.

Tanah Lot Temple

Our first week in Bali was mainly exploring around; we went over Canggu and Seminyak popular boundaries. We hopped on the scooter, and in about 40 minutes, we reached Tanah Lot Temple. Surrounded by the sea, this temple is for sure of the most instagrammable places in Bali. 

Local tradition says that the temple is home to the sea gods due to its position. In fact, make sure you plan your visit based on the sea tide. If there is high tide (like us), you won’t be able to visit the temple; instead, with low tide, there is a path marking your way to the temple. However, you can still admire the beautiful surrounding view.

Suluban Beach

Maybe one of the best highlights of our escape to Uluwatu, down the surfer cliffs of Bali. Suluban Beach, also known as Blue Point Beach, is a hidden gem tucked beneath dramatic cliffs on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. The scenery blew us away. Unique and incredible to witness high waves and hundreds of surfers catching them in open seas. Its unique rock formations, turquoise waters, and hidden caves make it a paradise for photographers. 

Explore the hidden nooks, watch the surfers catch the waves, and capture the raw beauty of Suluban Beach. You must walk down the cliff through the narrow concrete staircase. Make it to the slim beach and snatch the best shots with the rough sea trying to catch you.

Sekumpul Waterfall

This is for sure a natural wonder worth visiting in Bali. A cluster of seven cascades surrounded by lush greenery. Like most waterfalls in Bali, there is a small trail that you need to cross through the jungle. The path is well marked, but we recommend wearing hiking boots as it’s a bit challenging reaching Sekumpul waterfall.

Believe us, after the trek through the jungle, you will be rewarded with an incredible view, and you can capture the beauty and power of the cascaded as they cascade down the rocks.

Gitgit Waterfall

If you’re making your way up to North Bali, you can’t miss visiting Gitgit waterfall. Located 40 minutes from Lovina and almost 2 hours from Canggu, Gitgit waterfall is worth the long drive. A postcard-worth spot nestled amidst tropical rainforests.

You can dip in the cool waters and snap your instagrammable pictures with the cascading falls in the background. The hike to the waterfall takes around 15 minutes; make sure you wear appropriate shoes and avoid flip-flops.

The best time to visit Gitgit waterfall is between April and October, during the dry seasons. However, you can visit the waterfall all year round, but the rainfall increases the difficulty of the hiking path.

Tegenungan Waterfall

If, during your Bali itinerary you’re staying in Ubud, you might want to check Tegenungan Waterfall. It’s one of the most famous ones thanks to its picturesque settings.

The powerful cascade plunging into a shallow pool is framed by lush greenery and rocks. The water is clear and cold; in fact, it’s perfect for a swim and cooling off after the hike to the top.

Kelingking Beach (From Above) 

If you’re coming to Bali, most likely, you are already planning a trip to Nusa Penida to visit the famous Kelingking Beach. Yes, Kelingking Beach is one of the best Bali Instagram spots thanks to its unique shape, turquoise water and sandy beach. The best time to visit Kelingking Beach is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. 

Once you get your pictures from the above, you can start your way down to the beach. The hike is about 30 minutes, and it can be challenging. However, it’s absolutely worth it. Being one of the most instagrammable places in Bali means that you will find many tourists around. We reached the beach before 9, and there was already a small queue to take pictures.

Rumah Pohon Treehouse

Without any doubt, Rumah Pohon Treehouse is one of the most instagrammable places in Nusa Penida. For sure, when scrolling on Instagram, you see this famous spot where Instagrammers and tourists take a picture sitting on the stairs of the treehouse.

The view from this spot is unique; in fact, if you can, visit the treehouse during sunset. The colours are just insane, and believe us; you won’t regret it!

Crystal Bay

Considered one of the most beautiful bays on the island of Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay is known for its crystal blue water, coral reef and white sand. It’s, for sure, one of the best spots for swimming, diving and snorkelling. In fact, if you can, book a snorkelling tour in Nusa Penida. Prepare your bikini and your camera, and enjoy taking pictures in this spot.

Diamond Beach

Last but not least, on our Instagram spots in Nusa Penida, there is Diamond Beach, a hidden paradise with pristine white sands and turquoise water. The unique rock formation creates a surreal picture-perfect setting; in fact, you need to capture the beauty of Diamond Beach from above.

The hiking path to Diamond Beach is about 15 minutes; however, it might be challenging; despite the path being well-maintained, there are parts where you need to climb with a rope. Wear comfortable shoes and absolutely avoid flip-flops!

Nusa Lembongan 

We ended our Bali itinerary, by relaxing and working in Nusa Lembongan. We really loved the tranquillity of this island that we decided to extend for an additional week.

The coast of Nusa Lembongan is perfect for learning to surf and for swimming in crystal blue water. We rented the scooter and were able to properly explore the island and cross the famous Yellow Bridge that connects Nusa Lembongan with Nusa Ceningan. Visit Nusa Lembongan beaches and snap your Instagram pictures. 

Nusa Ceningan

Connected with Nusa Lembongan with the famous yellow bridge, Nusa Ceningan is a must-visit. Take a dip in the crystal blue water, relax at the beach and capture the vibrant hues that the Blue Lagoon makes.

Find your spot to capture the perfect shot of the Blue Lagoon and enjoy the stunning panorama that Nusa Ceningan has to offer. 

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are a trio of tropical paradise islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, near Bali. The islands are known for their white-sand beaches, clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere. Depending on what you’re looking for, the three different Islands, Gili T, Gili Air and Gili Meno, you can pick the right island for you. Gili Meno is ideal if you’re looking to relax, Gili T is known for being the Party Island, and Gili Air is a mix of both.

However, despite choosing the right island, you can go swimming, snorkelling, diving, parting and relaxing on the beach. The Gili Swings are a great way to add a touch of paradise to your Instagram feed. The picturesque swings against the backdrop of crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches are sure to make your friends and followers envious.
