This guide will introduce you to the hotspot of Bali, which is filled with many activities and some hidden gems and discover all the incredible things to do in Canggu. The best things in Canggu will have a mix of unique Balinese experiences, early wake-up, perfect sunsets and weekend activities.
Just to give you a complete overview of Canggu, it is the most hyped location to stay in Bali. The little village is a thriving spot for holidaymakers, and it’s popular among content creators, digital nomads and influencers. Among some of the best places to visit in Canggu, we will go deeper into the activities from surfing to practising yoga, spending time on the beaches and giving tips on where to have work done from coffee shops and co-working.
When to visit Bali?
When planning a trip to Bali, one of the first questions you might ask is when is the best time to visit this Indonesian paradise. Bali is a tropical destination with a warm and humid climate year-round. As a result, the island experiences two distinct seasons, the dry season from April to October and the wet season from November to March.
If you want to enjoy sunny and dry weather with little chance of rain, the best time to visit Bali is during the dry season. Unfortunately, this period also falls within the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and crowds. However, if you want to avoid crowds and don’t mind occasional rain, visiting during the wet season is a good option.
Another factor to consider when planning your Bali trip is the island’s festivals and events. Bali is home to many colourful and vibrant festivals, such as the Galungan and Kuningan festivals, which celebrate the victory of good over evil. How to get to Canggu
Canggu is easily accessible from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The airport is located in Denpasar, a short distance from Canggu. However, in 2023 we experienced Bali’s chaotic traffic. What was once a fair 45-minute drive to the airport is nowadays a 1 hour and 30 minutes during peak hours. Outside the airport, there are taxis available, some private and some on share. We suggest booking your transport in advance as it is easy and you will get fast-track transport.
Alternatively, you can jump on a grab, booking outside the airport. Recently the company that manages transportation in South East Asia has implemented a hub for their drivers, and you can just stand there and attend to your car. However, if you choose the pick-up point there, be aware that there are 5K IDR additional fees for airport taxes, the Grab driver can add it to your card, or you can pay cash.

Enjoy the cafe’s atmosphere
We spent a lot of time jumping from café to café. Every single space is unique and has some particular activities or style. We tried many warungs; these are traditional local restaurants. For an authentic taste of Indonesian cuisine, head to one of the many warungs in Canggu. These small restaurants serve delicious and affordable dishes, often made from family recipes passed down through generations.
The menu usually is set and consists of a variety of rice dishes, grilled meats, and spicy sambal sauces. Many warungs also offer vegetarian and vegan options, making them great for all dietary needs. Our favourite Warung within Canggu is Warung Sika.
We often ate here, lunch and dinner, and it never disappointed us. Be aware that the place gets filled up quickly during pick hours. The atmosphere at a warung is casual and friendly, with locals often stopping by for a quick bite and chat. Consider that with tourism picking up in Canggu, there are many other “Warungs” opening up, but they are just for tourists, and you can see that in prices too.
Take time to visit Tanah Lot Temple
We spent a few hours roaming around the village that led you to Tanah Lot. The temple outside the outskirts of Canggu is worth a day trip. Tanah Lot Temple is a must-visit attraction in Canggu, known for its stunning ocean views and unique location. The ancient Hindu temple is unique because it is perched on a rock formation just off the coast. You can’t reach the temple on high tide even though the landscape is fantastic, with crashing waves and dramatic cliffs.
Consider visiting the temple at sunset, when the sky is painted in shades of orange and red. To get to Tanah Lot is quite a ride on the bike, but you can hop on a guided tour that takes you through the hassles of driving through traffic. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history and significance of the temple or stroll around and take in the breathtaking views.
Shop at the weekend at La Brisa Market
For a lazy weekend, we chose La Brisa Market. This popular weekend market is in the heart of Canggu, a few metres away from the beach. The market is open only on Sunday and offers a variety of products, from clothes and accessories to home décor and artisanal goods.
We loved to shop around the handmade products and unique creations in Bali. The atmosphere in La Brisa is laid-back, and you can easily spend an entire day between the market, the bar area and the pools. There is no entrance fee at La Brisa, but it is hard to get a table on the weekend.
Catch the sunset on Bali most famous beach
Batu Bolong is a famous beach in Canggu known for its surfing waves and stunning sunsets. Visitors can watch the sun go down while lounging on the beach or enjoying a drink at one of the beach bars. The sunset view is exceptionally breathtaking, with the sun casting a golden glow over the ocean and surrounding landscape.
The beach can get crowded during peak season, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a good spot. Whether you’re a surfer or just a beach lover, Batu Bolong is a must-visit spot in Canggu.
Rent a scooter and explore the rice fields
While in Bali, we spent two months on a scooter, but it wasn’t our first time driving in SEA. We had the freedom to move around, get the designed day trips, and make last-minute plans. Just getting outside of Canggu village, you will start to notice a change in scenery.
The rice fields take over dreamy white villas, making the lush a unique, beautiful memory of the Bali landscape. Overall, Canggu is surrounded by beautiful rice fields that offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Renting a scooter is the best way to explore the countryside and enjoy the stunning scenery.
You can drive through winding roads surrounded by lush greenery and traditional Balinese villages. The rice fields offer an insight into the local way of life, and visitors can witness the farmers at work.
Go on an adventure-seeking waterfalls
Bali is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, and Canggu is a great starting point to explore them. Visitors can go on a waterfall adventure by renting a car or joining a tour. Some of the most famous waterfalls near Canggu are Tegenungan Waterfall, Nungnung Waterfall, and Gitgit Waterfall.

Early bird for the sunrise from Mount Batur
The alarm was pointed at 2 am. Our driver was already waiting for us outside of our homestay in Seminyak. We knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. After all, it is not every day that you go hiking on an active volcano. So We sat for the ride toward Mount Batur, to the island’s eastern point.
The hike to the summit takes around two hours and starts early in the morning, so it’s essential to be an early bird to catch the sunrise. The hike is quite challenging if you are not fit, but the landscape is insane. The view from the summit is breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscapes, lakes, and mountains. As the sun rises above the horizon, the sky is painted with a beautiful orange and pink hue, creating a serene and peaceful ambience.
The lake below Mount Batur makes the landscape even more unreal. Apart from the hike, you can go for an effortless experience unless you are dreaming. Hop on a jeep that takes you to a panoramic spot. The way up to the steep hills is fantastic and surrounded by lushes and solidified lava. The guide will also take you to the lava spot, driving on board a jeep for a fun adventure. It’s truly an unforgettable moment that you don’t want to miss.

Walking around Canggu, you will spot the amount of creativity that’s for more than just the thriving influencers and content creators flocking to the island in search of freedom. Yes, we did that too. We rented a villa in Bali and spent a fantastic weekend with friends. It was during Nyepi, Bali’s new year, when the island gets wholly shut for the celebrations. Well, in the past 5 years, Bali has lived its best life, but many say that the best is yet to come.

How long should you spend in Canggu?
Visiting Bali for the first time, you are heading to Canggu or Seminyak. These are two of the popular holiday destinations in Bali. Even though you have everything you want for a holiday in Canggu, we suggest staying here for a few days only.
If you spend one week in Bali, it is worth checking out Uluwatu and Ubud. If you have a bit longer, experience the bursty life of Canggu, and head to the quiet North to visit Lovinia and Monduk for a truly Balinese experience. To Summarise, plan three days in Canggu for the best time in the cool Bali atmosphere.
Getting around Canggu
Canggu is reticulate of streets that range from one stream to another, passing by three main busy roads. All the roads in Canggu lead to the beach, one unique ribbon of sand. There are three entrances to the beach Mejan Stone Beach and Batu Bolong.
Renting a bike, you will discover some of the hidden spots of Canggu, but also some well-known roads. The famous Canggu shortcut was our passway between Berawa and the cafes, the road passes through rice fields and is one of the most scenic landscapes in Canggu. The bike is the fastest and most common among the many ways to get around Canggu.
However, you must know that there are sharing services and private services that are easy to book on your phone. Even though we don’t suggest it, you can also go around Canggu by bicycle and e-scooter, which are the most sustainable way to stay in Bali.
Rent a scooter in Canggu
We have rented a scooter in Canggu since day 1. I still remember my face when I was trying to get a coffee in the morning, walking through the Canggu shortcut. It was a nightmare, and my first reaction was to send a message to the scooter hire shop my friend suggested earlier.
Scooters in Canggu are popular, and even though we always look for sustainable ways to get around, there are few alternatives. However, bear in mind that driving in Canggu needs some skills. Therefore, rent a scooter only if you feel completely comfortable with the moped and have some previous experience.
There are many scooter rentals in Canggu, and with the popularity comes scams. Our rental place was great; they delivered the scooter to our accommodation and got it back from there too. If you want, we can share the contact privately. Please send us a DM on Instagram; happy to help.
The monthly rental should be between IDR 50K and IDR 100K for a basic scooter (Canggu is becoming more expensive monthly). If you stay longer in Canggu, expect to pay anything between IDR 1 Million 200K to 2 Million, depending on the period, for a standard 150cc. We had the Vario, and it was fantastic; we even rode for 2 hours under heavy rain to reach Monduk.
Go Jek and Grab
You can easily navigate through Canggu to book transport on your mobile phone. We get that driving in Canggu is challenging, and you might believe you have the skills, but the reality sets you off. Don’t worry. Both Grab and Gojek are popular and cheap. They offer a motorbike taxi, reliable and always available.
Travel Insurance
Nowadays, booking travel insurance is becoming part of the travelling plan. However, it’s just a precaution, and you should consider it even if you are an experienced traveller.
Planning to spend some time in Bali, which includes activities like driving a scooter, going surfing, and hiking to find hidden waterfalls, makes it necessary to have travel insurance. Berawa | Between Canggu and Seminyak, there is Berawa, a newly booming location. There are many new restaurants and bars, and for the two months we have been in Bali, we have seen the landscape change within weeks. Find hotels in Berawa.
Pererenan | Located a bit far away from the action is the perfect area to stay if you seek peace and no sounds. But walking down the street, there is Tribal, a fantastic co-working space and Sol rooftop bar for an aperitif at sunset. Is it worth visiting Canggu?
Yes. Canggu is the heart of the Bali Movement that pushes people to move to the Island of Gods. The Digital Nomads call it home for a reason. Canggu is a fantastic hub to make new friends, understand Balinese culture and start your adventure in Bali.
Is Canggu or Uluwatu better?
Canggu is better today in terms of things to do but less good in terms of quality of life and overall experience. Canggu is definitely too crowded and hyped at the moment, and if you are looking for a more laid-down atmosphere, go to Uluwatu instead. Also, the absence of a centre in Uluwatu and the distance from the beaches make it only possible to navigate with a scooter.
Is Canggu good for nightlife?
Yes. We had some of the best nights out in Canggu. The clubs, bars and restaurants are top notches, and you can find anything you want. Of course, you don’t pay for club entrance, but there are also high-end restaurants if you want a more fancy atmosphere.
Is it safe to walk around Canggu at night?
Yes. We generally had no problem in Canggu. The locals are friendly, and you will always find people looking after each other.
Is Canggu or Seminyak cheaper?
Both destinations are popular among travellers to Bali and cost the same.
