We loved to walk around, as it is a pedestrian-only area, with no cars or mopeds allowed.

If you have already been somewhere else in Turkey, the Izmir market will give you the same vibes as Istanbul, with an intricate maze of streets. Every alley has its speciality; some parts are dedicated to carpets, others to spices, clothes, shoes, and a specific one for ceremonies with many wedding dress stories (You understand the redundant question coming while walking around this street).

Affordable trip

Compared to other tourist destinations in Turkey, Izmir is relatively affordable, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travellers. In addition, accommodation, food, and transportation are reasonably priced, making it an ideal destination for backpackers and those who want to experience Turkey without breaking the bank. The city has a range of museums, galleries, and cultural centres that showcase the city’s heritage, including the Izmir Archaeological Museum, which houses a vast collection of artefacts from the Greek and Roman periods, and the Izmir Ethnography Museum, which displays traditional costumes, crafts, and musical instruments from different regions of Turkey.

Delicious food

Our mouth is still watering from the delicious food we tried in Turkey. Turkish cuisine is known for its rich flavours and fresh ingredients, and Izmir is no exception. The city is famous for its seafood, meze, and street food, such as kumru, a popular sandwich made with grilled meat, cheese, and vegetables.

Warm Hospitality

We felt super safe in Izmir, which is mostly thanks to the friendly and welcoming locals. It was our first time in Turkey, and it definitely went very well. Izmir is a lovely city with locals ready to help you out. It is not that touristy so that might be one of the reasons. English is not widely spoken, but you can get along well, as they try to make the best effort. Overall, Turkish people are known for their hospitality, and you’ll feel it in full force in Izmir.

The beaches in and around Izmir are some of the most beautiful in Turkey. One of the closest is Karsiyaka Beach, just 8 km away, with crystal-clear water and stunning sunsets. Izmir has a vibrant nightlife scene, with various bars, clubs, and music venues catering to all tastes and styles. There’s something for everyone in Izmir’s nightlife, from live music performances to dance parties.

Get lost in the maze of Kemeralti Bazaar

The famous market of Izmir is a fantastic place to start your Izmir itinerary. Reportedly one of the oldest and largest markets in Turkey, located in the heart of Izmir’s old town. The Bazaar is a labyrinth of narrow streets, alleyways, and courtyards, selling everything from spices and textiles to antiques and souvenirs.

Drink traditional Turkish coffee at the Bazaar

While exploring Kemeralti Market, we had to try traditional Turkish coffee. Surprisingly, every sector of the biggest Bazaar in Izmir is specialised in some way. The most surprising alley is, of course, the one that sees many coffee shops aligned. 

We stopped by Kahveci Omer Usta to get our excellent Turkish coffee. It is strong compared to the Italian Espresso but still tastes nice. If you can experience the history and preparation behind the coffee in Turkey. It was fantastic to discover that there are many traditions behind a single cup of coffee.

Admire the landmarks in Konak Square

The main square of Izmir is located in the city centre. The square centre is the iconic clock tower, which is a symbol of the city. There are also several historic buildings around the square, including the Konak Yali Mosque and the Konak Pier.

Visit the trendy Alsancak

Alsancak is a trendy neighbourhood in Izmir known for its cafes, bars, and restaurants. The area is a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike, and it’s a great place to experience the city’s nightlife.

Kadifekale

Kadifekale is an ancient fortress located on a hill overlooking the city. The fortress was built during the Roman period and offered panoramic views of Izmir and the Aegean Sea. It’s a great place to watch the sunset and take photos.

We suggest staying in Izmir for at least 5 days, as there is so much to do in the city and surrounding area. Izmir province is filled with incredible attractions, from Pammukale to Ephesus. Definitely, Izmir history is fascinating. A city that was founded by Greek and became an important commerce point for Romans.
