Unlike the bustling streets of Bangkok, this city offers a more relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal destination if you want to escape the urban chaos. To get the best out of Chiang Rai, we suggest immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the local markets and indulging in mouth-watering street food.

Yep, we love Thai food, and in the north, they have some dishes that you might not find elsewhere in Thailand. While in Chiang Rai, you must engage with the warm and welcoming locals who are always eager to share their unique customs and stories.

We are independent travellers and love to get experiences first-hand. I don’t know, but it seems more authentic. However, while in Chiang Rai, we went on a guided tour. There are many reasons why we made this choice. Apart from clearing the ground by saying that most of the tribes are very welcoming, giving you a chance to interact with them and sustain their community, there is another part of the medal to consider.

There are several reasons why it is suggested to choose guided tours when interacting with hill tribes. These tours are commonly guided by people who have built connections with the tribes, guaranteeing respectful interactions and emphasising cultural exchange. If you come from a city background, your overall experience might underestimate the power of a local explaining your customs and mediating with the tribe.

If you are still willing to venture into a tribe encounter on your own, be mindful of local customs, seek permission before entering the tribal community, and research their customs and guidelines before getting there. Getaway to Laos

We travelled to Chiang Rai to break up the journey from Chiang Mai to Laos Border. Many Digital Nomads treat Chiang Rai as an overnight stay close to the border and cross to renew their visa or embrace an adventure. Well, we did the same, but to embark on a journey on the Mekong River and explore Laos, but that’s another story.

Chiang Rai’s strategic location near the border of Laos opens up the possibility for an overlanding adventure in South East Asia. You can embark on a journey to the nearby town of Chiang Khong and, from there, take a bus or a tuk-tuk ride to reach the harbour of Huay Xai on the other side of the Mekong River.

Chiang Rai is a getaway to the enchanting town of Luang Prabang in Laos. We suggest considering this trip if staying longer in Asia. It was one of the most inspiring journeys of my life.

Chiang Rai Has the Blue and White Temple

There are three major temples in Chiang Rai that you must include in your list of things to do. This paragraph will concentrate on why Chiang Rai is worth visiting, around two major attractions: The Blue and White Temple. 

The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) is a stunning work of art and architecture that stands out among the many captivating attractions in the city. With its mesmerising blue exterior that shimmers in the sunlight and intricate details, this contemporary temple is truly a masterpiece.

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is another architectural marvel designed with intricate carvings that tell stories of Buddhist teachings. Baan Dam | The Black House

Well the popular temples in Chiang Rai are essentially three, but there is one that is only for passionate travellers. The Baan Dam is commonly known as the Black Temple.

Located a little north of the town centre, it’s easily accessible by public buses up Route 1. The Black Temple boasts about 40 stunning buildings, each filled with fascinating art pieces and relics from all over Southeast Asia.

The master-mind behind the designs of the buildings is the esteemed Thai artist, Thawan Duchanee. The designer found inspiration in the age-old construction techniques of the Lanna-Lao community that previously lived in this region. The evidence of this influence can be seen in the elaborate carvings adorning the peaks of temples, the steeply angled gabled roofs, the intricately carved door coverings, and various other elements.

A visit to The Black Temple is an absolute must if you have any interest in art, history, and the local culture of Chiang Rai.

There is plenty of outdoor activities in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai’s natural beauty is wonderful, and you will not get bored at all. Well, still an off-path destination because most people treat Chiang Rai as a mere day trip from Chiang Mai or stay a couple of days before a thrilling adventure to Laos. However, we invite you to spend at least three days in Chiang Rai and dedicate one of them to an outdoor adventure.

The surrounding landscapes of Chiang Rai offer a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. We will talk more, later on, about the options you have to escape the city and be surrounded by lush greenery and forest. For now, you might be interested to know that there are more than just rice fields, including tea plantations, hiking trails, Wild Elephant encounters, Hills tribes, coffee plantations and more.

Tea Plantations and Rice Fields

As said before, tea plantations and rice fields are a good excuse to get out from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Chiang Rai. Explore the lush tea plantations that blanket the hills surrounding Chiang Rai. The scent of tea leaves and the panoramic views create a tranquil atmosphere, inviting you to unwind and savour the moment.

Additionally, the picturesque rice fields that paint the landscape in vibrant shades of green provide a serene backdrop for your Chiang Rai adventure. Actually we were very surprised to see that the coffee culture is also taking advantage of the favourite climate of the region.

There is a lot of variety of coffee produced on the hills surrounding Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, especially around Pai area, which was perfect for me, a coffee lover, if not better saying Coffee addict.

Elephant Valley nearby Chiang Rai

A short distance from Chiang Rai lies the Elephant Valley, a sanctuary where these majestic creatures roam freely and thrive in their natural habitat. It is not the usual sanctuary, but is a more ethical one, which lies in a natural reserve. 

Visiting this sanctuary is not just a chance to witness elephants up close, but also an opportunity to support ethical tourism practices, which is not easy to find. The locals running the sanctuary truly prioritise the well-being of these incredible animals, and let them live free.

Escape to Doi Luang National Park

If you’re a nature enthusiast, a visit to Doi Luang National Park is an absolute must. The park’s diverse ecosystems encompass lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and rare wildlife species. The hiking trails lead to breathtaking viewpoints that reward your efforts with panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.

As you explore the park, the gentle symphony of cascading waterfalls and babbling streams becomes your constant companion. Towering trees reach towards the sky, their canopies creating a sanctuary for an astonishing variety of flora and fauna.

You must know that the Chiang Rai area is on the border with Bruma (Myanmar). The wild land is a continuous hill rolling interrupted just by mountains and scenic streams. Chiang Rai is a safe and welcoming destination for travellers seeking adventure. We never felt unsafe, even after a night out. The centre is constantly busy with locals and tourists all around. The city’s reputation for warm hospitality is matched by its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors.

As with any travel destination, we invite you to be cautious about your surroundings, especially in crowded places.

Visa for Thailand

Most tourists can enjoy visa-free travel for a specified period, typically ranging from 30 to 60 days. This allows you ample time to explore the city’s attractions, engage with its cultural offerings, and immerse yourself in its unique charm.

For those planning an extended stay, it’s advisable to research and apply for the appropriate visa before your trip. Thailand offers various visa options, including tourist visas, business visas, and long-stay visas, each with its requirements and conditions.

Thailand currency

The Thai Baht is widely accepted throughout the city, and you’ll find ATMs, currency exchange services, and banks readily available for your convenience.

Coming from the UK it was easy to withdraw cash, but actually while in Thailand most of the cards will be charged 220 Baht per withdrawal (£ 4.96 | € 5.8 | $ 6.29). This is a mandatory fee that most of the ATMs and Banks charge us. If you are staying longer in the country we suggest taking out cash in big chunk at May Bank (The yellow one) which allows you to get 30,000 at time, about £700 (€790 | £ 860)

Thailand Travel Insurance

We did a nine-month backpacking trip through Asia with ease, partially thanks to the peace of mind given to us by the annual insurance. Yes, we know it might sound slightly more cautious and unnecessary. Well, it was very necessary; I felt sick in Koh Samui, and then in Bali, we had recurring Bali Belly and more, but nothing major.

Even though every time we took a flight, we thought that our luggage might have gone missing (which never happened), it wasn’t a problem; we were covered for any loss, even equipment (cameras, drones, phones, laptops, everything!).
