If you don’t feel, there is a bus tour that takes you to the top of the Crater. Remember, despite most of the people think, is not possible to hike the Vesuvius from Pompeii.
What you can do on the top of the Volcano
From the top of the Volcano, you can enjoy the amazing view on the Bay of Naples and the breathtaking path along the rim, looking down to the heart of the Vesuvius. On the top is hot, a testimony of the activity that is still going on kilometres below. The hikes to the top are not easy, take a jumper with you, because it will be windy and gets cold. Wear comfortable shoes and be careful about the rocks.
If you want to know more about the eruption of the 79 AD, you can visit the MAV. This a new interactive museum. To be accurate the MAV is an Archaeological Museum that shows in 3D what happened, with videos about all the phases of the Eruptions.
How to get to Herculaneum from Sorrento
Everybody knows Pompeii as the place for the best Roman ruins. Many people think about Pompeii as the only place, but thanks to dedicating blogs, Herculaneum is becoming well known.
Direct under the Volcano there are the ruins of another great Roman city. Herculaneum at that time was even more powerful and known than Pompeii. It was destroyed by the same eruption of Pompeii of 79 AD. Ercolano is now the city that is basically on top of the ruins. Those have been for years hidden and forgotten under the ash and the new constructions.
Our suggestion is to visit the Herculaneum Ruins
As you can understand, Herculaneum is just under the Volcano. The centre of the eruption was here, so the entire city is under 50 meters below the actual city, more than Pompei. Because it’s a quite new site, Herculaneum Ruins are smaller than Pompeii, but thanks to some private funds, more parts are discovered.
Literally, there are some people living on the edges of the archaeological excavation. The ancient Herculaneum was rich and powerful, there are so many building that is bigger and rich in ornament as mosaics, statues, and tools. The entrance to the site is cheaper than Pompeii, and also you can visit the MAV. This is a museum dedicated to the arts and the Vesuvius, with an interactive 3D film about the eruption.
The Archeological site of Paestum – Visit Paestum
This is another underrated gem of Italy, Paestum is an Ancient Greek temples Site. This is the real proof of the origin of Southern Italy, that is belonging to other cultures before Romans. Paestum is not in the Amalfi Coast, it is more in the south of Campania. Paestum is in the Cilento, an amazing coastline.
It is a less touristic place compared to Pompeii and Herculaneum, but it is not less awesome. The Paestum’s Temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a symbol of the southern coast of Campania. The Paestum’s Temple of Neptune is really well preserved, and it is just one of the three Greek temples of the site.
You can visit Paestum from the city centre of Napoli. From the main train station of Naples, Piazza Garibaldi, you can take a direct train to Paestum Ruins. The ride on the Train of Trenitalia will take around 1 hour and a half, it will cost less than 10 euro, depending on the day and peak time.
